PHP-Nuke 2010 Labor Day Champs - The Gold!

The Gold has done it again in Puerto Rico by going undefeated during this year's Labor Day Tournament with a record of 8-0. They have taken the last 3 championships this year and look poised to win all 4 championships, if they can win the 2010 Columbus Day Tournament here in the Bronx. Congratulations to the Gold for a very dominating 2010 performance.

  Blvd Logo Stickball @ Coney Island - September 11th, 2010 from 10am to 3pm

Get ready New York City the New York Emperors Stickball League is bringing OUR favorite past time to Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York. Coney Island's historical importance will receive a boost on September 11th, 2010 as we remember Steve Mercado and pay tribute to his contribution to Stickball. This year will be the first of many Stickball exhibitions being played throughout NYC to re-introduce the game of Stickball and put on a show in order to help spread the word that Stickball is here to stay.
The Event will take place on 15th Street between Bowery Street and the Coney Island Boardwalk from 10am-3pm. Mark your calendar and get ready to enjoy some good old fashion Stickball! The events are still being finalized, so stay tuned for more information...

Coney Island, New York
Coney

Brief History of the Game
While the exact origins are up for debate, most accounts depict a game that rapidly began popularity in the early 1920s New York City.  Baseball had firmly taken its place as America’s favorite pastime and kids hoping to emulate their heroes saw an opportunity.   An urban environment unforgiving to the rules of baseball, they made do with no gloves, mop handles and Spalding’s known as pinkies rounded out the equipment... Parked cars, lamp poles, manhole covers, trees, buildings, fire hydrants were all part of the playing field. With all of those elements a traditional New York sport was born, Stickball “a poor man’s game”.

Stickball was used by inner city kids to mend racial tensions and to put an end to gang wars.  Instead of fighting they will form teams and play for money, but the true prize was bragging rights, if you were the best Stickball team you were well known throughout the city.  Throughout the years, Stickball players that left New York took the game with them.  Now there are leagues in San Diego, Puerto Rico, and Florida.

The ‘80s is Stickball was starting to get more organized.  In 1985 a group of young men, led by Frank Calderon and Frank Sanchez found a side street in Soundview Avenue in the Bronx and formed The New York Emperors Stickball League.  They obtained a permit from the city to close Newman Street to traffic every Sunday from the first week of April through October.  Three years later, the street was officially named Stickball Boulevard.  In 2002 our fallen hero Steve Mercado was added to Stickball Blvd.

  PHP-Nuke Latest playoff results

The first round of the playoffs went pretty smoothly for the top 4 teams in the league. First we had the Ravens vs Royals on field 1, which saw the Ravens come out of top to advance to the next round. On field 2, the Leland Legends dominated the Stem by putting on a hitting clinic to beat them a lot to a little. The 11am games featured the Emperors vs Saints on field 1 where the Emperors went on to beat the Saints. The Gold then defeated the Bandits to complete the expected outcome of the top 4 teams advancing to the 2nd round of the playoffs in a 2 out of 3 match up.
In this round the Gold faced off against the Ravens on field 2 with the Ravens starting the game with an early lead. The Gold came back and won the first game to take the lead in the series. The Gold is winning the second game with 3 more innings to go and had to be stopped because of a tornado!
Across the field the Emperors faced off against Leland and there was nothing but excitement in this series. The first game saw a 1-1 tie until the 6th inning when Leland scored 2 runs in the bottom of the six to take and hold onto a 2 run lead to take the first game. The second game is now in the bottom of the 6th with the Emperors leading by a score of 3-2. The Emperors are the home team, so Leland has 3 more outs to go. Can Leland come back and score to take this game and advance to the championship? Not if the Emperors have anything to say about it. A lot is on the line for both teams, so good luck and let the best team win!
This Sunday we'll pick up where they left off followed by the 2010 NYESL championship later that day!

The Gold lost 1 game all season and has once again set the mark for all teams wishing to be the best in Stickball. With the #1 defense and offesense Gold has demostrated what it takes to make it to the top and hold on to that spot for most of the 2010 season. Congratulations to the Gold and here's this week's playoff line up:
First Round : 10am
Field1:
Ravens Vs Royals
Field2: Leland Vs Stem

First Round : 11am
Field1:
Emperors Vs Saints
Field2: Gold Vs Bandits

The first round is a one game elimination face-off, while the subsequent rounds are a 2 out of 3. Good luck to all teams.

SPREAD THE WORD!

Synopsis: Unemployed artist Nina Rivera is at her breaking point in her noisy
Bronx neighborhood. She is intimidated to step to Mateo Reyes, her young
thuggish neighbor and source of the noise. They finally have a confrontation
that forces both of them to examine how to navigate the space they both take up.

The New York International Film Festival is an amazing place to see not just my
film, but great & hard-to-find American Latino & Latin American cinema. Please
visit their website and check out all the other great films that are going to
play: http://nylatinofilm.com/index.html

Some of my recommendations of films to see at NYILFF:
* American Dreams Deferred
* Miracle of Spanish Harlem
* Circo (Circus)
* Cookie (short film, part of the Delinquent Habits Shorts Program)
* short film by Angelo Lozada, "Accountable."  Angelo is hilarious!!! Boricua
stand-up comedian.

Much Love!! ~Sonia Gonzalez-Martinez

  PHP-Nuke FINAL WEEK PREVIEW

GAME OF THE WEEK
The battle for 2nd place will take place at 10:00am on Field #1, between Leland Legends and Bronx Emperors. Both teams are currently tied for points in the standings. After a 1-1 tie earlier in the season against each other, the Emperors went on to beat Leland 3-0 a month ago. I believe this game will come down to who makes a mistake first. For Leland, someone will need to join Dave in driving in runs. Boobie has his sights set on this job (see Forum). For the Emps, someone will have to set the table for this week, since Vido will not be there. Who will step-up?
HONORABLE MENTION
Royals Vs Ravens – With the Saints playing two of the best teams this week, the Ravens will be looking to secure the #4 seed while the Royals will be trying to take the 5th seed from the Saints.
REMAINING GAMES
Bandits Vs Gold – Bandits are trying to hold on to the last playoff spot. Gold is trying to finish the season with only 1 loss.
Ravens Vs Personal – Personal needs wins this week to get into the playoffs. Ravens did not score a run last week, they’ll be looking to rebound against Nothing Personal.
Royals Vs Bandits – Can the Bandits hold on to the last spot? Can they finally score against the surging Royals?
Stem Vs Leland – This might be a preview of a 1st round playoff game.
Saints Vs Emperors – Saints are trying to solidify their playoff spot. They had a hard time scoring last week without Al Jr. He should be back after missing due to the birth of his daughter. (Congrats!)
Personal Vs Stem – Is it too late for Personal? They need to win both of their games this week to stay alive.
Saints Vs Gold – Gold is looking for the season sweep. Saints have other plans, they are out to prove their team is for real.

PHP-Nuke Week 12 Schedule - Last regular season games

The 2010 NYESL season is coming to a close this weekend and the NYESL has many great things to be proud of. From our collaboration with Nike SportsWear, the always exciting Memorial Day Tournament and the upcoming season finale, the NYESL once again demonstrated that the our Stickball community is as strong as ever. The NYESL is affiliated with other Stickball organizations in San Diego, Miami, Orlando, Puerto Rico, Manhattan and New Jersey and has members from places throughout the United States. Leagues in those areas have also had an exciting year and the NYESL congratulates them and looks forward to many more years working together to help promote the game of Stickball.
As the premier league currently playing the fungo style (self-hit) of Stickball, the NYESL has made Stickball possible in other parts of the country. Past NYESL members were like Stickball seeds planted in places like Florida, California and Puerto Rico and they then introduced Stickball game within their community. Now, full leagues have sprung up throughout various states and are flourishing as never before.
We thank the representatives from other leagues like Greg, Willie and Tim from San Diego, Eric and Ruben from Puerto Rico and Bobby and Nestor from Florida for supporting the NYESL and building true partnerships to help the game flourish. The NYESL would also like to thank the Manhattan Stickball League for supporting our Memorial Day Tournament.
The NYESL is currently making plans to introduce the game to other local communities throughout New York City, so stay tuned for more information on that as plans are carried out and confirmations received. Stickball is rooted within the urban community in New York City and the NYESL has one primary mission:

The New York Emperors Stickball League utilizes Stickball to provide a safe, healthy and affordable alternative for athletes of all ages. Family and friendships create the nucleus needed to carry on our Stickball tradition and we emphasize the importance of comradeship within our community. But, the competitive nature of our Stickball players adds a level of competition comparable only to professional sports such as Baseball or Football. This competitive drive is evident in all N.Y.E.S.L. sponsored events, especially in the most prestigious Stickball Tournament: The Memorial Day Weekend Invitational Classic Tournament. Our goal is to revive Stickball and bring it out of the New York City streets and into America’s spotlight, while at the same time maintaining a well grounded foundation from which to build upon for future generations.

  Blvd Logo Week 11 Recap

Game of the Week
For the past two years, the battle for the last playoff spot has come down to a game between Bandits and Nothing Personal during one of the final weeks of the season. On Sunday, the Bandits left no doubt who was the better team in their 7-1 trashing of Nothing Personal. This marks the second year in a row that the Bandits have gotten the better of NP when it mattered most. Nick had 2 huge hits, driving in 3 runs to lead the Bandits. Tone chipped in with a late 2 run HR. Lou Bonilla made 2 outstanding catches in this game to prevent any scoring threats by NP.

Other Action
Gold 4 Vs Emperors 0 - HR's by Angel Jr and Pito powered the Gold to victory in yet another shutout victory. Ant and Vido collected 3 hits each, but it wasn't enough to put a run on the board against the 1st place team.
Stem 5 Vs Bandits 1 - Looks like Bandits were saving their runs for their game vs NP. David led the way for Stem, 3-4, 2 RBIs.
Saints 1 Vs Ravens 0 - Juan's RBI was the only run needed for a Saints victory. Elvin had 2 hits in the losing effort.
Royals 3 Vs Leland 2 - Ralphy's 7th inning, RBI single, drove in the winning run for the Royals. He has been hot lately for the Royals and has 9 RBIs in just 11 games.
Stem 3 Vs Saints 2 - Vic, DJ and Daryl each had an RBI for Stem in this victory. Pete Jr was 2-4, with a HR and 2 RBIs in the losing effort.
Gold 2 Vs Ravens 0 - Ravens got shutout for the 2nd straight game on Sunday. I guess the Gold proved they were not going to lay down for anyone even though they had already clinched the #1 seed.
Leland 7 Vs Personal 3 - The Legends came out swinging and took it to Nothing Personal. Eddie F was a perfect 4-4, Edwin and Dave each had 2 RBIs for Leland. Joey had a 2 run HR and Tutu was 2-3 with an RBI for NP.
Royals 5 Vs Emperors 3 - Royals picked up their 2nd win of the day as Kevin was a perfect 3-3. Petey helped out by drining in 2 runs. For the Emps, Caban, Vido, Eric & Arnie all had multi hit games but couldn't bunch them together to pull out a victory.
