Latest playoff results
The first round of the playoffs went pretty smoothly for the top 4 teams in the league. First we had the Ravens vs Royals on field 1, which saw the Ravens come out of top to advance to the next round. On field 2, the Leland Legends dominated the Stem by putting on a hitting clinic to beat them a lot to a little. The 11am games featured the Emperors vs Saints on field 1 where the Emperors went on to beat the Saints. The Gold then defeated the Bandits to complete the expected outcome of the top 4 teams advancing to the 2nd round of the playoffs in a 2 out of 3 match up. In this round the Gold faced off against the Ravens on field 2 with the Ravens starting the game with an early lead. The Gold came back and won the first game to take the lead in the series. The Gold is winning the second game with 3 more innings to go and had to be stopped because of a tornado! Across the field the Emperors faced off against Leland and there was nothing but excitement in this series. The first game saw a 1-1 tie until the 6th inning when Leland scored 2 runs in the bottom of the six to take and hold onto a 2 run lead to take the first game. The second game is now in the bottom of the 6th with the Emperors leading by a score of 3-2. The Emperors are the home team, so Leland has 3 more outs to go. Can Leland come back and score to take this game and advance to the championship? Not if the Emperors have anything to say about it. A lot is on the line for both teams, so good luck and let the best team win! This Sunday we'll pick up where they left off followed by the 2010 NYESL championship later that day!

Urban Lullaby in the NY Int'l Latino Film Festival
Hey all, Sonia from the stickball do*****entary "Bragging Rights"! I made another film. My short comedy Urban Lullaby is premiering at the New York International Latino Film Festival (NYILFF) on the following dates:
Thursday, July 29th @ 4:30p Chelsea Cinemas 260 W. 23rd St (bt. 7th & 8th Aves) Screen 8
Sunday, August 1st @ 3:30p Visual Arts Theater 333 W. 23rd St (bt. 8th & 9th Aves) Screen 1
It stars FRANKIE MARTINEZ (The Gold), Steve Plerqui (The Gold) and Ty Davis (Nothing Personal). My film is under the F.M.L (F**k My Life) Shorts Program Category
SPREAD THE WORD!
Synopsis: Unemployed artist Nina Rivera is at her breaking point in her noisy Bronx neighborhood. She is intimidated to step to Mateo Reyes, her young thuggish neighbor and source of the noise. They finally have a confrontation that forces both of them to examine how to navigate the space they both take up.
The New York International Film Festival is an amazing place to see not just my film, but great & hard-to-find American Latino & Latin American cinema. Please visit their website and check out all the other great films that are going to play: http://nylatinofilm.com/index.htmlSome of my recommendations of films to see at NYILFF: * American Dreams Deferred * Miracle of Spanish Harlem * Circo (Circus) * Cookie (short film, part of the Delinquent Habits Shorts Program) * short film by Angelo Lozada, "Accountable." Angelo is hilarious!!! Boricua stand-up comedian.
Much Love!! ~Sonia Gonzalez-Martinez

Week 12 Schedule - Last regular season games
The 2010 NYESL season is coming to a close this weekend and the NYESL has many great things to be proud of. From our collaboration with Nike SportsWear, the always exciting Memorial Day Tournament and the upcoming season finale, the NYESL once again demonstrated that the our Stickball community is as strong as ever. The NYESL is affiliated with other Stickball organizations in San Diego, Miami, Orlando, Puerto Rico, Manhattan and New Jersey and has members from places throughout the United States. Leagues in those areas have also had an exciting year and the NYESL congratulates them and looks forward to many more years working together to help promote the game of Stickball. As the premier league currently playing the fungo style (self-hit) of Stickball, the NYESL has made Stickball possible in other parts of the country. Past NYESL members were like Stickball seeds planted in places like Florida, California and Puerto Rico and they then introduced Stickball game within their community. Now, full leagues have sprung up throughout various states and are flourishing as never before. We thank the representatives from other leagues like Greg, Willie and Tim from San Diego, Eric and Ruben from Puerto Rico and Bobby and Nestor from Florida for supporting the NYESL and building true partnerships to help the game flourish. The NYESL would also like to thank the Manhattan Stickball League for supporting our Memorial Day Tournament. The NYESL is currently making plans to introduce the game to other local communities throughout New York City, so stay tuned for more information on that as plans are carried out and confirmations received. Stickball is rooted within the urban community in New York City and the NYESL has one primary mission:
The New York Emperors Stickball League utilizes Stickball to provide a safe, healthy and affordable alternative for athletes of all ages. Family and friendships create the nucleus needed to carry on our Stickball tradition and we emphasize the importance of comradeship within our community. But, the competitive nature of our Stickball players adds a level of competition comparable only to professional sports such as Baseball or Football. This competitive drive is evident in all N.Y.E.S.L. sponsored events, especially in the most prestigious Stickball Tournament: The Memorial Day Weekend Invitational Classic Tournament. Our goal is to revive Stickball and bring it out of the New York City streets and into America’s spotlight, while at the same time maintaining a well grounded foundation from which to build upon for future generations.

Week 11 Preview
Game of the Week It was easy to pick the top game this week, because no other game has as much playoff implications as this one: Personal Vs Bandits. This battle will take place on Field #3, or as some call it, “The Field of Trees.” Both teams are vying for the last playoff spot and the Bandits have a 1 point edge going into Sunday. The season matchup so far has been split. Bandits will have to find a way to score more, last time out they scored just 1 run in 3 games. For Nothing Personal, the bats will have to stay hot as they did a couple of weeks ago when they collected 34 hits in their last 3 games. Honorable Mention Several good games this week, tough to pick just one. Gold Vs Emperors will matchup the top 2 teams against each other. This game means more to Emperors as they try to hold on to 2nd place. Will Gold play their regulars now that they have secured the #1 seed? Remaining Games Bandits Vs Stem – Bandits look to hold onto that last playoff spot, Stem tries to gain ground on the Royals. Ravens Vs Saints – A win for the Ravens will pretty much secure the 4th place spot. Saints will try to hold off those teams behind them. Leland Vs Royals – Leland is trying to catch the Emperors for 2nd place, any losses will put an end to those plans. Stem Vs Saints – Can the return of Wayne carry Stem into a hot streak before the playoffs? Mick and his teammates will try to end those thoughts. Gold Vs Ravens – Another good matchup this week. Ravens look to bounce back from a crushing defeat to Leland last week. Leland Vs Personal – Personal is fighting for rights to their first postseason, every game is important. Emperors Vs Royals – Royals are out to prove they are better than their record shows. All I can say is that Chino Vs Tito is the best sidewalk battle of the day! See you guys on the Blvd. -Ron

2010 NYESL TEAM LEADERS I was browsing through the teams and the stats and decided it was time to do an article on each team, giving props to those that are helping their team week in and week out with their bats. I am starting with the last place team and work my way to the first place team. *For the average category, I decided on a minimum of 30 At Bats, I am also putting the top 5 players for each team category. I have also included a few other stats not listed in the team leader categories. I hope you guys can appreciate the effort of tracking the stats on to the website and to collect all of the stat sheets for every game. For this I want to thank Ruben Rodriguez (Royals) for the effort he makes each and every week to get these stats in. 2010 NYESL LEAGUE LEADERS Hits HR’s RBI’s 1. Dave (Leland)-37 1.
