Week 5 Preview
Game of the Week
Bandits Vs Stem - Both teams showed some promise last weekend during the MDT. Bandits have the upper hand after making Monday of the MDT. They beat several decent teams to get there. The younger players of the Stem have played well but need to be more consistent if they want to win this game and improve their record on the season.
Remaining games
Emperors Vs Royals - With only 2 wins on the season, the Royals might have taken a turn for the better during their solid MDT showing. This game vs the Emps will tell if they are going to springboard from the tournament into the season. Tied for 1st, the Emps could use every win possible during a day where they have three games scheduled.
Saints Vs Leland - The first time these two teams met, Leland blanked the Jersey City team. Both teams faced off during the MDT and Leland destroyed their opponent. Will this be a repeat performance for Leland?
Bandits Vs Gold - Gold is coming off another tournament win during their 20th year celebration. Can the Bandits play like the contender they showed this past weekend?
Royals Vs Saints - This is the 4th time these teams play against each other this year. Royals have won the last two games quite easily. The Saints have to be more consistent on both sides of the ball if they want any chance to win this time.
Diamondbacks Vs Stem - Winless after three weeks of the season, the Dbacks are in need to take the monkey off of their back. Last time they played, two runs was the difference between winning and losing.
Ravens Vs Emperors - Ravens are coming off a poor MDT showing. Not making Monday should be enough motivation to do better. The Emps have been playing well and will look to continue their solid play.
Leland Vs Diamondbacks - The Dbacks have their work cut out for them by facing off against one of the league’s elite teams. Leland doesn’t want any slip-ups against any team they should beat.
Ravens Vs Gold - In their first regular season meeting, the Ravens edged the Gold with an 8-7 victory. That’s the only loss the Gold suffered so far during the regular season. Maybe the Ravens can use that particular win to gain some momentum and confidence.
Make-up games (Wk4-May 19th)
Emperors Vs Bandits - Bandits have been struggling but any game is winnable on Sunday. Emps have to make sure they keep their focus and are not looking past the Bandits.
Leland Vs Stem - Leland hasn’t been scoring like they are accustomed to and should be able to post several runs against Stem. Stem will not go down easy.
Ravens Vs Diamondbacks - Now at .500, the Ravens have a chance to go up in the ranks if they can continue to keep the Dbacks winless.
See you on the Blvd!

2013 Memorial Day Tournament
The New York Emperors Stickball League will host it’s 29th Memorial Day Tournament on May 25th until May 27th, 2013. This premier Stickball event will take place on Stickball Blvd in the Bronx. As in past years the tournament will showcase the best Stickball players from around the country. We’ll have teams/players coming in from Puerto Rico, Miami, Tampa, Orlando, New Jersey, California, Manhattan and of course the Bronx. All teams will play 3 games on Saturday, 3 games on Sunday and the top 8 teams will make it to the Monday 1-game elimination championship round. And then the hunt for the ultimate Bragging Rights trophy will intensify as players give 110% to claim the single most prestigious Stickball trophy – Memorial Day Champions. Standing in the way will be last year’s Champions, Bronx Emperors, who will look to use their experience to outwit their opponents and make it a back to back Championship streak.
But, many ask why is this the most prestigious Stickball event of the year?
It’s all about Tradition. The NYESL slogan “Stickball. Not just a game…A tradition” highlights that Stickball is more than just a sport that we use to stay active and healthy. Stickball represents family bonds and comradery. It’s an activity that brings together players from distinct backgrounds and makes them brothers. Brothers in the truest sense of the word: we laugh together; we cry together; we argue together; we mourn together; we are a family. We learned these traditions from our Stickball Oldtimers who still to this day pass on their wisdom and vision of the sport. It’s a contagious tradition that captures the hearts of all those who share in its passion.
Come join us and this weekend as we kick things off on Stickball Blvd!
Date: May 25th – May 27th, 2013

Week 4 Preview
Game of the Week
Gold Vs Emperors - No an easy choice this week as Gold Vs Leland could’ve been the game of the week as well. I gave the nod to the Emps after winning their GOTW last time games were played on the Blvd. You can catch this game on Field #2 @ noon.
Remaining games
Emperors Vs Bandits - Bandits have been struggling but any game is winnable on Sunday. Emps have to make sure they keep their focus and are not looking past the Bandits.
Leland Vs Stem - Leland hasn’t been scoring like they are accustomed to and shoul be able to post several runs against Stem. Stem will not go down without a fight.
Ravens Vs Diamondbacks - Now at .500, the Ravens have a chance to go up the ranks if they can continue to keep the Dbacks winless.
Saints Vs Stem - Can Skylar hit another HR or two on field #1 again? The Saints better hope not.
Royals Vs Diamondbacks - This week’s beerfest will be played on Field #2 when both of these teams matchup. Oh, my bad, no keg this week for the Royals. Anyway, Royals should be able to score several runs in this game.
Gold Vs Leland - As mentioned before, this could be the game of the week. Both teams are strong offensively and defensively. This should come down to a late inning AB or error.
Royals Vs Bandits - The Bandits will need to show some hunger while playing in this game. Former players will matchup against each other. That always leads to fun, healthy trash talk.
Saints Vs Ravens - Both teams are neck and neck in the standings and will be looking to gain a game in the win column. Should be a good game, well, if the cars aren’t interfering with field #3.
See you on the Blvd!

Catching up with Vido
With an off week this week due to the Mother's Day Holiday, I had an opportunity to catch up with Vido Creales, the league's Chairman. Vido is also currently in charge of overseeing the league's finances.
Q. About how many years have you been playing stickball?
A. I’ve been playing Stickball for 19 years.
Q. What is your favorite thing about stickball?
A. One of my favorite things about Stickball is every Labor Day Tournament. I look forward every year to travelling with my family to other parts of the country to play Stickball with old friends.
Q. I know you have been a part of The Board for some time now, exactly how many years has it been?
A. I’ve been on the board of the NYESL since 2001. I was part of a group of individuals that were able to help bring the league back on its feet after our former President, Steve Mercado, passed away on 9/11.
Q. What made you get involved with the running of the league?
A. This is my way of giving back to a sport that has provided me with great memories and friends. I consider Stickball as a social support group that I can turn to when needed. Stickball is about family and doing good things for yourself and others and that’s what I’m doing by giving my time, energy and effort to this cause.
Q. What separates the NYESL from all the other leagues?
A. The thing that mostly separates this league from all others is the foundation on which it was built. The founding fathers Frank Sanchez and Frank Calderon had a vision and they carried this through. It is our responsibility to continue the tradition and keep Stickball alive on Stickball Blvd and others parts of the country.
Q. There have been several changes to the league this year as mentioned earlier by Bombi. What has been successful?
A. We made a few changes this year that still need time to work themselves out. For example, the home run rule has added a new dimension to how games are played on Calderon Field (1). The same can also be said about the Sanchez Field (2), while on the Mercado Field (3) this is an non-issue. Another major change has been the taking over the responsibility of selling the food on Stickball Blvd. So far things have gone as expected, but the league needs the support of the players to make this work.
Q. Now that three weeks have been played, how is the new Home Run rule working out?
A. We believe it to be a good change. Our first priority is safety and we’ll do what it takes to ensure that we have a safe atmosphere when playing Stickball. As with any change it takes time to get used to, but so far things are working out great.
Q. I believe we have only had one really good day of weather this season, temperature wise anyway, do you think the HR's will increase as the weather gets better?
A. HRs will increase on windy days because of the weight of the ball, but on windy days last year you would also see an increase in the number of homeruns.
Q. How is the Memorial Day Tournament looking so far? I read on Facebook that the Heat won't be attending this year, how many teams are expected to participate?
A. The Memorial Day preparations are ongoing, but things are going smooth so far. The board is working hard to make sure this is a successful tournament as it has been in the past. We have about 15 teams committed to playing this year, so we’re looking forward to seeing our extended family once again in the Bronx.
Q. Do you think the league will ever get away from the pumped ball?
A. Pumped balls have become an integral part of how Stickball is played in the New York Emperors Stickball League, so I do not foresee our league going back to non-pumped balls.

Week 2 Recap
Game of the Week
Saints 4 Vs DiamondBacks 3 - Saints led this game from the 2nd inning and never surrendered the lead. DBacks added all 3 runs late in the game but couldn’t get one more needed hit to win it. Freddy’s clutch 2 run double sealed the win for the Saints. Joey was 3 for 3 and Mike had 2 hits and a RBI. Schenkel collected 2 hits and a RBI in the loss. Chris and Tutu had an RBI each for the DBacks.
Other games
Leland 9 Vs Bandits 0 - Leland collected 15 hits in this blowout game. Izzy had 3 hits and 3 RBIs, including a HR for Leland. Ferdi added 2 RBIs in the win. Tony was 3-3 for the Bandits in the defeat.
Gold 8 Vs Stem 4 - Stem couldn’t hold down the Gold, allowing 8 runs after playing two close games in week 1. For the Gold, Josh had a HR with 3 RBIs, Betances collected 3 hits and 2 RBIs and Pete was a perfect 3 for 3. Skylar had 2 RBIs and a HR for Stem.
Royals 2 Vs Ravens 1 - Games can’t get any closer than this. Chris hit a solo HR and Cooks had the second RBI for the victorious Royals. Tim drove in the only run for the Ravens.
Saints 5 Vs Emperors 3 - Saints won their second game of the day by edging the Emps in a tight battle. Mike collected 3 hits for the Saints while Mickey, Pete Jr and Freddy joined him in driving in a run each. Caban continued his hot hitting by driving in 2 runs with a single.
Bandits 4 Vs DiamondBacks 0 - This battle of the winless teams ended up good for the Bandits. Tone hit a HR and drove in 2 for Freddy’s Bandits. Chris had a HR as well for the Bandits. Ty collected an unwanted hat trick in the loss.
Emperors 7 Vs Stem 1 - Stem was on the wrong side of this blowout. 40 was a perfect 4-4 along with 4 RBIs in the win. Jay chipped in with 3 hits and 2 RBIs. Danny drove in the only Stem run.
Gold 6 Vs Royals 4 - Gold edged the Royals in a close battle. Betances drove in 3 runs, 1 HR, for the Gold. Lenny had 1 hit but managed to drive in 2 runs for the Royals.
Leland 10 Vs Ravens 3 - Leland made a statement by hitting the double digit mark against the Ravens. Dave and Eddie hit a HR each for Leland. Dave drove in 4 runs and Eddie chipped in with 3 RBIs in the victory. Brunson drove in 2 runs for his squad.
See you on the Blvd!

2013 Season Preview and Power Rankings
Let’s take a look at the teams in the league and my own Power Rankings of them. We’ll start from the lowest to the highest.
#9 Bandits - What can you say, the Bandits posted one of their best seasons in quite a number of years when they won 10 games and finished in 6th place. They had a good run but lost their most productive players. Lenny, Chris, Cooks have found another team and rumor is Pito, 31 hits in ’12, won’t be back. Bandits always find a way to field a team but can they be competitive?
#8 Diamondbacks - This team formally known as Nothing Personal, is under new leadership and a new name. Jay and Tutu will now be at the helm. They have their work cut out for them after losing 5 key players that accounted for 105 hits and 32 RBIs. Joining the Dbacks this season is Ralph, formerly of the Ravens and John, formerly of the Falcons. The younger players will now have a chance to prove themselves and make their mark on this team and season.
#7 Stem - The Stem look like they might be taking a step back this season after showing some promise over the past few years. Rumors have it that they will be losing Wayne, Jen, Coree and Sky this season. No, they are not switching teams. The team has recruited a few new players, but also lost Warfield as he is playing with another team. Dave, Sean, Nas are still there to lead this team and I’m sure they will do their best to compete each and every Sunday.
#6 Saints - This team has the most personnel changes for the season. Pedro, Joey, Freddy, Mark and Ron have all left last year’s Nothing Personal team to rejuvenate this squad. Warfield also joins the team this season after playing the last few seasons for Stem. Mickey also returns after a year away from the Blvd. This team has a ton of potential and opened several eyes during the Columbus Day Tourney. The question is can they get used to playing with their new squad and will playing time become a factor on the team?
#5 Royals - The Royals are always in the middle of the standings at season’s end and have added some serious punch this year. Lenny, Chris and Cooks bring an average of 38 hits to a team that scored the 4th highest amount of runs in the league! Royals do lose Ralphy and Josh this season and there is the potential of losing Christian to college baseball. Roster changes can make it difficult for some players to stay on the field. Can they all co-exist? Bombi will have to manage that aspect in order to keep the Royals successful.
#4 Ravens - After making it to two of the four stickball championships last year, the Ravens are ready to take the next step. They are hyped about having Chungo on the team, after his departure from the Emporers. His experience will definitely benefit the Ravens. He is going to bring another good bat and great defense to his new team. Al Sr will also be playing a full season after joining the team late in 2012.
#3 Emperors - Emps had a great run last season but always seemed to be lacking that big hit when needed. They also lose one of their most dependable players to the Ravens. No matter what loss they face, the Emps are a veteran club with plenty of leadership and experience. Can they replace Chungo’s bat and defense? Is Tito ready to play some outfield now? We shall see.
#2 Leland - Eluding Leland year in and year out seems to be a championship. The team is comprised of veteran players and good team chemistry, but always are missing that one or two key hits when needed most. Rejoining Leland this season is Boobie after missing the last few seasons on the Blvd. Edwin put up some impressive numbers last season and is becoming one of the league’s best players. He will have to lead the way again if they want that championship title.
#1 The Gold - Well, this team is, of course, listed at the #1 spot and will stay there until someone can knock them off the top of the mountain. They lost a total of 3 games during the regular season and have another championship to prove that they are the league’s elite team. Richie always finds a way to keep this team together and focused around playoff time. Josh joins the outfield this season after spending the last several with his family on the Royals. I was surprised to learn recently that Chuchi will not be playing for The Gold this season. The kid had potential and barely missed out on the batting title in 2012.
I'll see you on the Blvd!

Opening Day Ceremonies : 9am Sunday, April 21 2013
This week the NYESL will begin its 2013 season with a Tribute to the Stickball
Oldtimers and the recognition of last year's award winners. The opening day
ceremony will begin at 9am followed by a 2 inning Oldtimer's game where
we'll get to watch the players that made this game what it is now. Yes, every
team is going out to Stickball Blvd to win and claim bragging rights, but
Stickball is much more that.
Stickball is about family and respect for one another. Our
duty is to promote sports as a way to stay healthy and out of the streets; to
protect our sons and daughters and provide role models close to home.
Come join us on Sunday, April 21st 2013 as we get the 2013 season rolling!!
Stickball. Not just a game... A Tradition!!

Invisible: NYESL and Castle Hill Little League
Community service is important in our world today. Those of us that have more now than we had when we grew up should look for ways of giving back to the community. So, in a effort to reach out our community, the NYESL has reached out to the Castle Hill Little League to help restore the Steve Mercado Club House pictured below. Today was part I of our effort, but the board is greatly disappointed. Basically:
League Player Count: 120 Players
Total effort from the league: 3 Players (Ant Live (and Son), Davey Hernandez, Vido Creales (and Son and Dad)
We had two players show up when the deed was basically done (one from Gold and one from Nothing Personal).
Those teams that plegded during the captains meeting that they'll help and not one ball player showed up should think again. This league is changing and all of us need to adjust. Just like you expect the league to put effort into this league, the league also expects each individual player to also put in some effort. So, if you were home "chillin", then this goes out to you.
How does that saying go: Ask not what this league can do for you, but what YOU can do for this league...
Below are some of the pictures of from today's effort:

There's more work to do..., so reach out to the NYESL board if you want to participate and give back!

NYESL Columbus Day Tournament 2012
Saturday Standings:
1) Gold 3-0-0
2) Royals 3-0-0
3) Ravens 3-0-0
4) Bandits 2-1-0
5) Saints 2-1-0
6) Leland 1-1-1
7) Emperors 1-2-0
8) Stem 1-2-0
While only 8 teams make the 1 game elimination on Sunday, all 12 deserve an applause. Thank you to SugarHill, P.R. Pride and Youngbucks from Manhattan for supporting the NYESL and a thank you to Nothing Personal. Changes to this league are coming and I'm sure that was evident today. Expect more and more changes in 2013 and if we work as a one (like today) there will no limits to where this game can go. See you guys at 9am!

2012 NYESL Champions
As Championship Sunday came and went, only one team could be crowned as the new Champs. Before we get to the championship game, some very good games took place as teams were eliminated one by one. Let's review some of those games.
Saints started the day by eliminating Nothing Personal, 2-0. Saints timely hits gave them the shutout victory.
It what was in my opinion the best game of the day, Gold needed extra innings to beat the Stem, 4-3. This game featured a few come backs to tie the game for the chance to play in extras.
Ravens came out flying high as they bombed the Royals, 15-9. Royals rallied but fell short of an incredible comeback.
Leland continued their amazing runs of shutouts and blanked the Saints 5-0. Leland compiled most of their runs in one big inning.
Emperors came out red hot and smoked the Bandits 14-5. The Bandits could not put together enough hits to make this a game.
In the next round to go to the championship, Ravens downed Leland 6-1 and The Gold defeated the Emperors 7-1. Both Leland and Emperors could not find enough holes in the defenses of their opponents to put up a crooked number in their scores.
The championship game was pretty much one-sided but I do not want to take away anything from the Ravens. They played very well and defeated a strong hitting Royals team and the #1 seeded Leland. The final score was 7-0. Gold proved to be too strong for the Ravens and the rest of the league.
Congratulations to The Gold for winning the 2012 New York Emperors Stickball League!
