Week 8 Preview
Another series of 3 games this week for every team except Nothing Personal. I'm sure everyone is glad they are not scheduled for 4 games! Game Of The Week
Out of all the matchups this week, I have to highlight the biggest game and that is Emperors vs Leland. Both teams are battling for 2nd place and they trail Gold closely by only 5 Pts. The competitive spirit always runs high when both teams face each other and I'm sure if you read the forums on this site, you can definitely attest to it. You have the 2nd highest scoring team, Leland, going up against the #1 defensive team, Emperors. The Emperors pride themselves on defense but Leland isn't too far behind, ranked 3rd in the league for points against. Something will have to give in this matchup! Look for Vido to keep setting the table for the Emperors and for Caban to continue the hot hitting from last week. For Leland, production from Edwin and Dave will be the key to success. First place Gold, will take on Bandits, Saints and Stem this week. All three teams will have to play good defense in order to stop the tournament champs from winning multiple games. The Ravens are hoping to keep pace this week with the teams ahead of them. They are only 4 pts behind both 2nd place teams. This week for them, games vs Nothing Personal, Royals and a showdown on Field 3 with the Emperors late in the day will be important. Saints will continue to have their hands full as they are set to complete their schedule this week with matchups vs Royals and Emperors. Royals will try to rebound from losses last week lwith games against Bandits, Ravens and previously mentioned Saints. Stem plays 2 of the top three teams, Leland and Gold and will try to hold off Nothing Personal, tailing by 1 point in the standings. Bandits have their work cut out for them with Gold, Royals and Legends scheduled for this week. You can be sure the Royals are out for revenge after the Bandits celebrated walk-off style against them during the Memorial Day tournament. Good luck to all teams, see you on the Blvd. -Ron

The Week After...
On Sunday, 6/6, the NYESL continiued the regular season after another spectacular Memorial Day Tournament (MDT). The week after the tournament marks the second half of the season. This is usually a good week for teams that had a successful tournament, to carry that momentum into the season, or for those teams that didn't enjoy MDT success, to rebound from a disappointing weekend. The week had some of the strongest winds, the Blvd has ever seen. In what was the Sunday's biggest matchup between top teams, the Gold and Emperors faced off. The Emps improved their roster by welcoming veteran player Mondy back to the league. They fell just a bit short though as The Gold edged out a 3-2 victory. Watts powered The Gold going 3-3 with a RBI. The Anthonys, Caban and Rosado, drove in run each in the losing effort. Ravens and Saints remained deadlocked at 1 after 7 innings. Saints out hit Ravens 8 to 5 but couldn't get that key hit to break up the tie when needed. Lenny, 2-4, was the only one to have a multi hit game in this tight battle. In a high scoring affair, Stem out dueled the Bandits 7-4. Gary had 3 hits and 1 RBI, Dave and Jonathan had two hits a piece for the Bandits. DLush had 3 hits for Stem but Danny powered them to victory with 2 RBIs, and a HR. Corree, Davey and Anthony all drove in a run, proving that the young foundation is looking strong for Stem. Talk about a slugfest, Legends and Royals pounded out a combined 24 runs in this week's highest scoring game. Royals got the best of Leland with a 15-9 victory. Everyone in the Royals lineup got a hit, Izzy lead the way going 5-5 and the Santana brothers, Eric and Kevin (1 HR) each had 4 RBIs. In the losing effort, Dave went 4-4 with 4 RBIs and 2 HRs. Saints took care of Stem with a 9-3 victory. The Saints Father and Son combo seemed to work as Al Sr and Jr accounted for 5 hits and 3 RBIs. Pete Sr joined the effort with a solo HR. Corree continued the hot hitting going 2-4 for Stem with a triple and a RBI. In what has become an intense matchup between Bandits and Nothing Personal, the Bandits edged out NP with a 2-1 victory. Tone and Damien each had 2 hits an RBI for the Bandits. Lionel drove in the only run for NP and had two doubles. Nothing Personal continued their season long, tough defensive play in their next game vs Leland and pulled out a 2-0 victory. The winds really took both teams out of their game, especially the deep fly balls. Legends had a surprising total of 3 hits. Pedro continued his hot streak for NP by driving in a run. Tutu and the rookie, Chris, each had 2 hits. Emperors shutout Royals 4-0. Caban kept his hot streak going, compiling 3 hits and a RBI. Looks like both Royals and Leland were exhausted from their heavyweight bout earlier in the day. Ravens edged out the Gold in a tight battle, 7-6. Stats were not posted at the time of this recap. Ravens continued a successful day by beating Stem 7-4. Ricky, 2-3, had 2 doubles for Ravens and Brunson, 2-3, drove in 2 runs. Corree, 1-3, continued a good day, getting another hit. DLush, 2-4, drove in 2 runs. Leland took out their frustration from earlier by pounding the Saints 17-5. Nine guys had at least 1 RBI! Edwin lead the way for Leland going 3-5, 1 HR and 3 RBIs. Russell also had a round tripper. Gil, 2-4, had 3 RBIs in the losing effort. Nothing Personal kept the good defense going in their game against the Royals and only allowed 1 hit! Deadlocked at zero in the bottom off the 7th, Pedro and Lou started the inning off with a hit each. After failure to turn a double play, Mike Schenkel came up to bat and had a chance to make the Royals pay. Mike came through for his team by hitting the ball over Andy's head for the game winner and walk-off, 1-0 victory. Some questions were raised whether or not this was a single or a 3 run HR. I'm sure that will be clarified shortly. A quick shower stopped the play for the day and looks like NP vs. Gold & Emperors vs. Bandits will have to be continued next week. -Ron

The "Stickball Originals" Series - Part 6
Big Cherokee - One Hell Of A Stickball Player
I had been away from stickball for about forty years when I learned it was not dead and was actively being played in a number of Cities. After some time, I managed to get in touch with some of the old time stickball players from the South Bronx who were living in the Miami area. From them I found out who was still around. One name that come up was Big Cherokee (George Aviles). He is in his early 80’s and was still playing stickball up to a couple of years ago in the Old-Timer games . He caries a Stickball bat in his car and can still hit today. If it were someone else, I would be surprised that an 80 year old could still hit, but not with Cherokee. In the early 1950’s Cherokee moved to Miami and was playing in a band. During the summer he would come up to the South Bronx and play good stickball as if he had been playing all season. He had a smooth level swing, hit the ball consistently and was a good fielder. When I heard his name, my mind went back to 1956 at PS51when he beat us in a game with two key hits playing his first game of the season .
In 1956, the Harlem Devils who played Hitting-on-a-Pitch stickball were having a hard time getting games since they were so good. They decided to play Hitting-By-Yourself also, and came up to PS51 to play the Tigers. They used Tito, Papi and Cherokee from the Jackson Knights. Cherokee lined two ball in the left corner of the school yard that our guy inside the fence couldn’t get to and the outfielder in the street couldn’t get through the fence. I was the outfielder in the street and watched both balls fall in for hits. Hitting balls in that corner of the school yard was a good job of place hitting, but for a guy who had just come up from Miami, this was really outstanding. We knew he could hit, but with Tito, Papi, Push-Push and Lilo, we were surprised he was the one who beat us. This is why I am not surprised he can still hit today in his early 80’s.
We should have won the game, but we let it slip away. The thing that really pissed us off was that the Devils could come up to our field and beat us in our game of Hitting-By-Yourself. The next week we went down to 115th Street to play them and it was a great game. The lead changed sides a few times and we were ahead in the eighth inning when the game broke up.

Chungo's Story
Why do I Lorenzo (Chungo) play stickball??? I remember as far back as when I was 14 years old getting woken up by the sounds of "Yo Nelson! Yo Eli! Come on Eric we late!"...looking out the window while the Youngblood’s took practice swings. This was about the time Tito took over the team… if any body knows Tee you know the Youngblood was looking fresh to def…these dudes had the hot teal jerseys with matching shorts…all I could think about was rocking one of those jerseys.
About 2 weeks later the fellas were practicing like they did every Thursday. I finally mustered up the courage to ask Tito’s pops if I could play and so like every kid I grab the bat and took my first swing. As expected I sent wind currents of 35mph up the block and this went on for about 15 min. But, I finally hit one and too bad it went over the roof. Just my luck. My second hit was a “SMASH”!! The ball go’s over the building…me thinking I’m doing good finally hitting the ball ,all I here is pops say “a cabezon takes the field”. After that practice tee asked me if I wanted to be on the team and I said “hell yea!”. Then Tito said “ I can’t promise you much playing time" and I remember thinking, playing time- who cares bout that I just want one of those hot jerseys.
I went home that night thinking Sunday couldn’t come soon enough. Sunday finally came with the sound of YOOOOO!!!CHUNGOOOOO !!! I run down stairs and jump in Tito’s MPV. When we finally got to Stickball Blvd and we have a team meeting, Tito throws me a jersey and tells the team Chungo’s down with us. That was the first time I felt like I had a 2nd family... To be 100% honest I’m getting choked up right now because I know in my heart Stickball saved my life. At 14 my life could’ve taken a turn for the worse. I thank god I have brothers like Elven, Cuz Joey, Nelson, Cuz Gil, Cuz Dave,pops(a.k.a)beanball head and so many more growing up. But, most importantly Tito and Eric I love you guys!! I couldn’t ask for anything more, 16 years of great memories. Stickball has been life changing for me! I look forward to every April to reunite with family. (Chungo#2)
