The Gold 20th Anniversary
The Gold celebrates their 20th Anniversary this year at Olivia’s Café in the Bronx. The Gold has the most Stickball Championships and it’s all due to the caliber of players and their leadership. In 2012 The Gold won the New York Emperors Stickball League Championship and the Columbus Day Tournament, which is 2 out of the 4 major Stickball championships of the year. This is a great accomplishment for a team who deserve a lot of credit for building a Stickball dynasty.
Come celebrate with The Gold at Olivia’s Café on Saturday May 25th at 6pm. It is located on 1854 Westchester Ave, Bronx New York.
Contact Richie Marrero at 917-992-6655 for more information.

Stickball on Mulberry Street
Attached to this story is a picture of a Stickball Plaque on
Mulberry Street in Little Italy. Mulberry Street may have been a play street
during the week, but on Sundays it was a field where great stickball games were
played. Teams from the South Bronx played there for years. We could play the
field as well as the Mott Street Team and they could do the same on our fields.
It was common for another team to show up on a field where a big game was being
played so they could play the winner. I played for the Tigers and a few times
we played the other team right there on Mulberry Street rather than going to
their field or ours. We flipped a coin for who batted last.
A few years back I wrote a story “Mott Street’s Version of Stickball Games Against the South
Bronx Teams”, but it never got to the NYESL web site. This story is below and
from it you can get a good idea of what old time stickball was like between
different neighborhoods. You can see the great respect the top teams had for each other. Here is that story.
Mott
Street’s Version of Stickball Games Against the South
Bronx Teams
Up until now, I have been writing stickball stories from the
perspective of the South Bronx. This story is different in that it’s Mott
Street’s perspective of games against the South Bronx teams. It is based on an
article in streetplay.com in the 2003 archive.
Years ago many teams did not have a name and they were often referred to by the name of the street they played on or the ethnic make up of the team or neighborhood. In the article, the Italians are Mott Street and the Puerto Rican Bronx team is what I have been calling the South Bronx team. We knew the Mott Street team was good and games against them would be tough, but it is always interesting to hear the story from the other teams side. I hope this this provides an insight on old time stickball and how great these games were. The following is part of the article.
These guys are not in the Stickball Hall of Fame but certainly belong there. They used to play for the Little Italy team that played against the great Puerto Rican teams from Spanish Harlem and the Bronx in the late 50s and early 60s.
Whoever had the opportunity to witness a game between the Italians and the Puerto Ricans on Mulberry Street on a Sunday afternoon saw stickball at its best. Both teams had outstanding hitters and fielders. And, unbelievable hustle and heart!
Outstanding hitters, fielders and unbelievable hustle and heart says it all. Years later when I met players from the other teams(Not only Mott Street) we talked about how great those games were. We never
mentioned who won, who lost or who was better. Just about how much we enjoyed playing those games.
I sent Vido a CD with stickball pictures from 1963 and 64. The first nineteen guys played in the Mott Street games at one time or another starting in 1956. Hope you get a chance to see what we looked like.
Push-Push (South Bronx Player)
Tiger (Mott Street Player)
Wally South (Bronx Player)
Junior South (Bronx Player)

Welcome To 2013!!
How time is flying...
Welcome to the 2013 New York Emperors Stickball Season!
It's been 27 years since the NYESL was founded by Frank Calderon and Frank Sanchez. And as we continue to enjoy and promote the game of Stickball on Stickball Blvd and other parts of the country, we cant forget the contributions of those that set the foundations and rules of the game. Others that were involved in the birth of the NYESL or involved during those early times were Henry Rosado, Daddy Pena, Bobby Medina, Bobby Ortiz, and Louie Mercado.
But, there are other "Stickballers" that belong on that list that we call The Oldtimers and consists of great competitors and sportsman. These players are now settled throughout New York City and across the country. This has led to Stickball now being played in an organized fashion on most major cities across the United States and also the Caribbean. So, this year we are dedicating the 2013 Opening Day Ceremony to The OldTimers for their great contributions. Not just Oldtimers from the NYESL, but also from Manhattan, Miami, Orlando, California, New Jersey, Puerto Rico that ever played the game. Stickball in these and other places has continued to flourish and expand and we congratulate The Oldtimers for these contributions on this day as well. We are currently compiling a list of names in order to create an "Oldtimer's List", which is a list designed to include the names of people that deserve to be remembered on this day. Please send us names and pictures to bxstickball@gmail.com

NYESL News
Last year The Gold won the NYESL Season and Columbus Day Championships, while the Bronx Emperors won the Memorial Day Tournament and Puerto Rico won the Labor Day Tournament. These are the usual suspects on the title's list, but many teams have made off season moves that can change things this year. Stay tuned for news on this topic...
In other news, Nothing Personal has officially changed it's name to the Diamond Backs and a few player moves were made during that transition. There have also been a few player moves on other teams that will be detailed during a later posting.
Opening Day is on April 21, 2013 with opening day ceremonies starting at 9:15am. Part of the agenda will be the celebration of last year's champions and MVP. We'll also be honoring last year's Golden Hands winners for each position, as well as, a Most Improved player from each team. The Steve Mercado Brotherhood Award will also be given.
We would like also announce the introduction of a major rule change. Due to safety reasons and other concerns the NYESL will be introducing automatic homeruns if the stickball is hit over the cones on any field. This will avoid a player running into traffic and risk serious injury, which is our primary concern after past close calls. Safety, safety, safety!! The details of this rule change are being discussed during the monthly captains meeting's being held during the last Thursday of every month. We'll be posting the entire details of the rule change and how it affects outfield play once things are confirmed. If you have concerns with this rule change, please contact your captain to discuss and bring up during the next captains meeting on March 28th, 2013.
Stay tuned for more NYESL Stickball news...

Gil, Tim H. & Miguel each collected 3 hits in the victory. For Stem, Lil Davey was 3-4, 2 RBIs, David was 2-4, 2 RBIs and Naz was 3-4, with 1 RBI.
Gold 4 Vs Bandits 1 - Gold found enough hits to pull out a victory after losing their first game of the day. Betances was 1-3, 1 HR, 2 RBIs, Dusty, 2-3 was the only Gold player with a multi-hit game. In the loss, Curks was 3-4 and Bambino drove in the only run in a 1-4 game.
Emperors 13 Vs Falcons 3 - Falcons suffered their second 10 run loss of the day, this time at the hands of the Emps. Most of the Emps power and production was provided by the following : Vido, 5-5, 1 HR, 2 RBIs, 40 was 4-5, 1 HR, 3 RBIs, Caban was 2-5, 1 HR and 3 RBIs. Chungo also drove in 3 runs for the Emps. Stem 4 Vs Bandits 2 - Stem earn a victory in their 3rd game of the day. Unfortunately stats were not entered for them at the time of this write-up. Bambino was 4-4 for the defeated Bandits.

Week 8 Matchups
*This week, and for the rest of the season, there will be a coin flip prior to each game to decide who the home team is. The exceptions are the makeup games noted below.
Game of the Week
Royals Vs Personal - If you were on the Blvd Sunday of the MDT, you know exactly why this game is the GOTW. Royals are out for revenge after being eliminated from the MDT via a 6 run comeback, walk-off style. Personal is out to prove this wasn’t a fluke even though the Royals have won both regular season meetings so far.
Other Matchups
Bandits Vs Saints - The question here is how do the Saints bounce back after forfeiting three games last week? We’ll see.
Ravens Vs Emperors - Ravens trail the Emps by 8 points in the standings, a win here will definitely help them cut those points down. On the other hand, Emps can increase their lead.
Leland Vs Bandits - After tying in week 1, Leland beat the Bandits the 2nd time around. Can the Bandits even the season series?
Gold Vs Ravens - A nice matchup worthy of a game of the week consideration. Gold has gotten the job done lately and the Ravens have certainly hit when needed.
Falcons Vs Royals - Royals are looking for revenge after losing via a walk-off the last time these teams met. Falcons are out to prove that the win wasn’t a fluke.
Personal Vs Leland - Another tough game for Personal. They have failed to score a run twice against Leland. If they want a win, they will have to come out swinging.
Saints Vs Gold - Gold will be looking for another win when matched up against the Saints. Both times these two were matched up, Saints lost by ten runs.
Emperors Vs Stem - Both teams have good defensive players. Emps have out-scored Stem but Stem did win the last matchup 1-0. Winner will break and win the season series.
Stem Vs Falcons - Falcons trail the 8th place Stem team by seven points in the standings. A win here for either team will definitely help the playoff seeding race.
Personal Vs Ravens - This will be the third game of the day for both teams. Ravens have won both games so far, but each game has been tight. Ravens get the edge in this one.
Makeup Games
Gold Vs Bandits - Bandits will be trying to make their mark on the season and need to show consistency in order to beat one of the league’s top teams.
Leland Vs Saints - Another big test for the Saints. This marks the third game of the day for both teams. Can either team be going for their third win of the day? Time will tell.
Emperors Vs Falcons -These teams have only met once so far this season. Emps have the upper hand, winning that matchup by a 5-0 score. You can be sure the Falcons will be trying to even the score.
See you on the Blvd!

Week 7 Matchups
Game of the Week
Royals Vs Ravens - Separated by only four points in the standings, Ravens will look to put a little more space between themselves and the Royals. Gil leads the Ravens with 23 hits and 9 doubles. Frankie leads the Royals with 27 hits and 13 RBIs.
Other Matchups
Emperors Vs Personal - Both teams are coming off a successful 2 win outing last week. Emps are 3-1 in their last four games, while Personal is 3-1-1 in their last five.
Falcons Vs Bandits - Bandits were 1-2 last week and Falcons lost both of theirs last week. Hopefully another forfeit is not in the Falcons plans. Bambino has been the Bandits’ hottest hitter with 23 hits and 16 RBIs. Falcons have been lacking run production and will need for someone to step up.
Saints Vs Royals - Royals dominated the Saints by a score of 9-2 last time these teams met. Considering the Saints losing streak, this game might end up with a similar result.
Emperors Vs Bandits - Bandits have a good challenge this game. Emps have allowed the least amount of runs this season and playing on field 1 should benefit them. If Vido and Eric continue to swing like they have recently, the Emps won’t have to worry about scoring enough runs to win.
Gold Vs Falcons - You have the league’s highest scoring team in the Gold versus the league’s 2nd worst runs against in the Falcons. You still have to play the games, because anything can happen.
Stem Vs Saints - These two are evenly matched in runs scores. Stem probably gets the edge due to having a better defense. Mike will have to increase his .270 avg, if he expects to lead the team to more victories.
Stem Vs Leland - Stem’s Anthony has been the team’s top run producer with 6 RBIs, 19 hits and a .413 avg. He will need help in this game since he’ll be playing against one of the league’s best scoring teams.
Gold Vs Personal - Last time these teams faced off, it did not end well for Personal. They will need to play solid defense to have a chance. Carlito leads the Gold with 19 RBIs and his 4 triples.
Saints Vs Falcons - This game is important for both teams to avoid being in last place. No one wants that kind of recognition.
Ravens Vs Leland - This should be a quality matchup of two teams that have been playing well recently. Both teams find a way to win when needed and have the players to come through in a clutch spot.
Royals Vs Gold - What can be better on Father’s Day than having two teams talk trash to each other? Well, that’s what you can expect here. Both teams love to go at one another and love to compete against the other. This should be fun.
See you on the Blvd!
