  Blvd Logo Week 3 Recap

Game of the Week
Emperors 3 Vs Leland 0 - The Emps turned the tables on Leland by breaking their undefeated streak and shutting them out. Both teams have now handed out 2 shutouts on this season. Ty and Ricky combined for 2 hits each and were the only players in this game with multiple hits. Vido and Tito drove in the runs for the win. For Leland, Izzy and Warren hit a double each and were the only players on their team with an extra base hit.

Other games
Saints 8 Vs Bandits 1 - There were many hits in this game, Saints with 15 and Bandits with 10, but the Saints did the majority of the scoring. Seven Saints players had an RBI. Mike led the way with 3 hits and Josh drove in 2 runs. Ray had 2 hits for the Bandits and drove in the only run for his team.
Gold 10 Vs DiamondBacks 0 - The Dbacks were overmatched in this game as they got pounded by The Gold. Dusty provided the power for the Gold by driving in 3 runs and hitting a HR. Eight other Gold players drove in a run. Carlito and Pito had 3 hits each to lead their team. John had 2 hits for the Dbacks in the loss.
Ravens 7 Vs Stem 1 - Ravens are trying to turn their season around and started it by beating Stem. Gary hit a HR and drove in 3 runs, he was joined by Elvin who also had 3 RBIs for the Ravens. DJ drove in the lone run for Stem.
Emperors 6 Vs DiamondBacks 2 - The DBacks remain winless after this loss to the Emps. Vido went a perfect 4-4, with 3 RBIs for the Emps. Ricky joined in with the hits, contributing 3 in the cause. Ty and Mark each drove in a run for the struggling Dbacks.
Leland 7 Vs Royals 4 - Leland bounces back after suffering a loss and beat the Royals in a high scoring game. Izzy drove in 2 runs against his former team. Jay, Ferdi and Dave drove in a run each for Leland. Cooks drove in 2 runs for the Royals in the losing effort.
Gold 11 Vs Saints 6 - Gold feasted off of Field 3 in this game. They scored early and added several late runs to hold off a late Saints surge. Josh was 4-4, 3 RBIs and Mickey had a 4-4 day as well in the loss for the Saints.
Royals 6 Vs Stem 5 - This was one of the day’s best games as Stem and Royals battled for 7 innings. First of all, Skylar blasted and I mean BLASTED, 2 HR’s in this game. He collected 3 RBIs for his efforts. Ruben and Christian drove in 2 runs each for the Royals. Eric’s clutch RBI broke up the tie late with the game winning RBI.
Ravens 2 Vs Bandits 0 - Cinco de Mayo didn’t arrive with a Bandits win, but the celebration did go on, Raven style. It was a low scoring game, but just enough runs were driven in by Tim to win the game. Tim’s 2 RBIs was the difference.
See you on the Blvd!

Blvd Logo A Word with the Commissioner

I recently took a time to ask the New York Emperors Stickball League Commissioner, Eddie Espada, a few questions regarding the league.
Eddie has been the Commissioner of the league since the last season and is working with the Board, Team Captains, players and volunteers to make the league successful.

Q: How many years have you been a part of the NYESL? And what team did you start your NYESL career with?

A: I've been in the league for 12 years now. I was introduced to the game by Frankie Martinez, Richie Marrero and Ralph Martinez. The Gold was the first team I played for.

Q: On the Boulevard, many people refer you to "Bombi". Why are you called that and who gave you that nickname?

A: The nickname Bombi aka bombilla, was given to me by Richie Marrero. He said my bald scalp looked like a light bulb (bombilla in Spanish) and I've been called that ever since.

Q: Last year was your first year as Commissioner, was it difficult to separate being Team Manager and League Commissioner?

A: At first I thought it would be difficult, but actually it's wasn’t too bad. When my team is playing, I'm just the manager of the Royals. Which is cool, I get to separate both and someone else from league with experience will act as a field judge.

Q: Who else is a part of the NYESL Board committee? What are their titles?

A: The NYESL Board committee consists of Vido Creales, his title is President and Treasurer, Ty Davis, Field Coordinator.

Q: What is different about the league this year compared to last year (2012)?

A: This year will be very interesting. There were some major rule changes because the community was very concerned with the safety of the players and motorists. We want to prevent players running into the middle of the street. So, for the first time in 29 years we will have a automatic home run rule.

Q: Why make the rule change now after so many years?

A: The community actually brought it to our attention during a meeting. In order to get help with the repaving of the streets, we had to come to terms with them.

Q: What challenges did the league face with this past off-season?

A: This past off-season challenge was to try to get the streets repaved. From what we hear, it's supposed to happen this year. We are still waiting for a date.

Q: How can someone join the league? Who can they contact?

A: Anyone can join the league with in reason, but you must be at least 16 years old. New teams are welcomed to join, but for the first two years, a new team will be on probation. You can contact any one on the board or email bxstickball@gmail.com

Q: I know the season hasn't started yet, but are the preparations for the Memorial Day Tournament (MDT) already underway?

A: Preparations for MDT are underway.

Q: How many teams are expected to play in the MDT?

A: As of now we are looking at four teams apart from the league teams. Those teams would be two from Florida and two from Manhattan. We're hoping the rumor isn't true about San Diego. The rumor we heard is that they don't have a league anymore. So we are hoping they'll still be joining our MDT and still hosting the Labor Day Tournament in 2014. We are hoping for the best.
See you on the Blvd!

Blvd Logo 2012 Columbus Day Tournament

The New York Emperors Stickball League welcomes the 9 home and several visiting teams to the 2012 Columbus Day Tournament. As always this year’s Columbus Day Tournament is the final tournament for 2012 season and will take place on Oct. 6th & 7th, 2012. Every year there are four major tournaments. The Bronx Emperors won this year’s Memorial Day tournament. The Bronx Gold then won this year’s NYESL Championship and Puerto Rico won the Labor Day Tournament in Miami, Florida. A noteworthy mention is that the Bronx Ravens were the runner up in the NYESL Championship against the Gold and Labor Day Championship against Puerto Rico. This now gives Artie Sailor and the Bronx Ravens a chance to capitalize on this momentum and bring home the Columbus Day Trophy and Bragging rights! But, standing in their way are long list of obstacles which in addition to the already mentioned Champions it also includes the Leland Legends, Royals, Stem and the new and improved Bronx Bandits, Nothing Personal and NJ Saints. Several Manhattan teams are also coming to the Bronx to make some noise and take home the Trophy.
There will be a captains meeting this Friday October 5th at 7:30pm. The meeting will be held at McDermott’s Pub on 2634 East Tremont Avenue Bronx, NY 10461.

Ravens 7 Vs Falcons 0 - A battle of the birds was supposed to take place but the Falcons forfeit yet another game. All I can say is SMH!
Leland 6 Vs Emperors 4 - Leland and Emperors battled in this close game. The win gives Leland an 11 point lead over the 3rd place Emps. Dave’s 3 run HR was the difference in this game for Leland.   Blvd Logo Mandatory Captains Meeting on Sunday 7/15

Due to recent developments regarding rules and timeliness of games, there will be a mandatory/emergency captains meeting this Sunday 7/15 at 9am on Stickball Blvd. If a teams fails to be represented at this meeting and on time, then a one point deduction will be taken on that team. We have had several captains meetings recently where not all teams were represented and this has led to confusion regarding rules and questions left unanswered.

Pass this along to all captains as there will be no exceptions when penalties are applied.

  Blvd Logo ATTENTION

The following is urgent, so please pass along to all players.
This past weekend the NYESL board received a large number of complaints from players from all NYESL teams regarding the timeliness of the start of games throughout the day. While we can't control the length of games for various reasons, the one thing the NYESL and captains can control is the start times. So, as of this Sunday forfeit rules will be in full effect for the remainder of the season. What does this mean?

- 1st game of the day will start at 10am and must start if both teams have at least 7 players each

- If a team does not have at least 7 players, then that team has a 15 min grace period.

- After the 15 minute grace period is over, the team will have forfeited the game. The game will be recorded as a loss and the winning team will be awarded 7 runs, so the final score will be 7-0.

- The team who forfeits for the first time will be given a warning. Once you forfeit more than one game a $200 penalty will be applied. The team cannot play the next game until the forfeit fee is paid.

- UMPIRES - If a team who is scheduled to umpire a game at 10am is not present with 4 umpires, that team will be penalized by one point for a first offense.
