2009 NYESL Season comes to an end this Sunday July 26th

The NYESL is down to the last Sunday of the regular season. Leland still holds 1st place despite another heart breaking loss to the Gold 6-5 this past Sunday. After Leland jumped out to the early lead Gold started a late inning rally that was completed by Carlito Santiago’s 2 run single. Watts was 3 for 3 with a rbi. For Leland Dave went 2 for 4 with a Hr and 2 rbi’s. Leland then took out their frustration on NP & ran away with a 7-1 win. Jay, Eddie F, Edwin had 2 hits each while Boobie went 3 for 4.

Due to Lelands loss to Gold, the Emperors had their chance to tie Leland in points with three straight victories. The Emperors first game was against Stem & the Emperors found themselves trailing early on but thanks to a rare dropped ball by Wayno from the Stem, The Emperors capitalized on the opportunity and pulled off the come from behind 6-5 win. Arnie & tyrone had 3 hits each while Albert Jr went 4 for 4 with a rbi. That win meant the Emperors were now only 3 points behind Leland with 2 games left in their day. So onto game 2 for the Emperors where they were able to pull off a 4-2 victory against Gold and keep the momentum heading in the right direction for them. Chungo & Al Jr both went 2 for 3 with 3 rbi’s btwn them.

Leland beat up on nothing personal in their last game so technically they still held a 3 point lead over the Emperors but the Emperors had one game left against the leagues 9th place team NP. With a chance to tie in points with Leland & possibly take control of 1st with 3 games the following week, The Emperors were unable to overcome the pressure and walked away with an disappointing 1-1 tie & are 2 points behind Leland in second place. Joey Gonzalez went 3 for 3 with the rbi for NP.

The Royals whom I mentioned last week were capable of causing some problems for the Gold and Ravens did just that & leap frog’d over Gold who trail by 3 points & the Ravens who trail by 5 points & after going 1 win 1 loss in their day.
Now the Royals find themselves in 3rd place & just 4 points behind the Emperors. They beat the bandits 4-2 in their first game. Ruben went 3 for 4 with a rbi & Daryl warfield added 2 rbi’s on 1 hit. Then they had a huge win against the Ravens in an exciting 8-7 game For the Ravens Miguel Almodovar went 3 for 4 with 3 rbi’s and Elias & Dusty added 3 hits of there own. For the Royals Petey Robles went 4 for 4 with 2 rbi’s and Kevin went 4 for with 3 rbi’s and Andy added 3 hits and 1 rbi of his own. Then the Royals completed the 3 game sweep by running over the Saints in their final game 8-0. Andy went 2 for 3 with 3 rbi’s & Ruben Daryl, Petey & Jose added 2 hits each.

Earlier in the day the Saints played well beating the bandits 7-1 For the Saint Lenny went 3 for 4 with 3 rbi’s then the Saints even pulled out a 4-2 win verse the Stem who were favored to win having the better record this season. For the Stem Davey & Wayno each went 2 for 3 but it wasn’t enough to compete with the Saints who had Al Sr, Josh, Mike & Jason add 2 hits each for the Saints. For their first season in this competitive league they showed a lot of heart & I wouldn’t be surprised if they pulled out at least 1 playoff win.

The final weekend of the regular season is now upon us. After a long season of grinding every Sunday on the boulevard, the 2009 regular season is down to 3 games Sunday before the playoffs. The top 3 teams in the standings right now (Leland, Emperors & Royals) have all made big changes to their rosters before the season began with nothing but championship intentions & for the bragging rights in the greatest stickball league in the world. Will Leland hold onto 1st place after holding it for most of the season? or will the Emperors steal 1st  place from Leland in the final week of the season? Or will they come up short on the last day of the season? Will Gold find a way to steal 3rd place from the Royals? Or will the Royals sweep again & hold onto 3rd place? The answers to these questions will play out this Sunday July 26th on Stickball Boulevard. Good luck to all the players & may the BEST teams win.

Come join us on the Boulevard this coming Sunday to watch us wrap up the regular season. Intense competition is expected this final weekend & you don’t want to miss it.

Look out for next weeks 2009 season wrap up article that will include the playoff bracket & kick off the NYESL post season.
