2017 Columbus Day Tournament

2017 has been an eventful year. The Leland Legends won their first championship, the Gold showed their dominance in the league like always, France came to visit the NYESL, the MLB Network and the NYESL have been working together to expand this game we love and much more. Recently as many of you know, Puerto Rico is going through some tough times after Hurricane Maria. I would like to send my condolences to all those families and friends that have been left with little to nothing in Puerto Rico. Usually this tournament is played to honor breast cancer awareness but this year, we are playing for much more than that. We are all lucky to come together as a community and play stickball in honor of breast cancer awareness, Puerto Rico, and our fallen stickball member, Joey Pacheco , who recently passed away in a tragic accident. The League will like to help donate clothes to those in Puerto Rico so if you want to particapate in this charity event, please bring any clothes that may be no use to you. We will be collecting clothes all weekend and sending them to Puerto Rico with in the week. Please help our Puerto Rico family as much as you can.

This year we have the nine regular season teams, Emperors, Saints, Silver Bullets, Gold, Ravens, Sugar Hill, Royals, Diamondbacks, and Leland Legends, entering the Columbus Day Tournament. The Columbus Day Tournament is a two day tournament that raps up the end of the year for stickball. Each team will play 3 games Saturday and the top 8 teams will advance to Sunday, which is a one game elimination playoff format. Each team is trying to end the year on a good note so do not expect nothing but extremely competitive games all weekend. Here is a look at the schedule:

Week Five Recap

Saints 0 – Diamondbacks 5:

The Diamondbacks came into this week salivating with the idea that they could start the week off with an early (9am) victory against the Saints. Unfortunately for the Saints, they could not put up enough of a fight to stop this from happening. I have to admit, being on the wrong side of results all of last season, I am pulling for the Saints (just not against my team). The Dbacks exploded for four runs in the bottom of the 3rd and that’s all they needed for a victory. Martin, back to playing stickball, started the scoring with a  2 run double. Joey and Anthony followed with 1 run doubles apiece to finish the scoring that inning. In the 5th, Joey drove in Martin to score the fifth and final run of the game. Jeremy was the highlight of the day for the Saints, going 2 for 2 in the game.

Saints: Jeremy (2-2, 2 Singles)

Diamondbacks: Martin (2-3, 1 Single, 1 Double, 2 RBIs)    Joey (2-3, 2 Doubles, 2 RBIs)

Emperors 1 – Leland 4:

Leland was looking forward to this matchup on Field 3. Earlier this season when these teams faced off, Emps won by a run, on a few Leland miscues. Leland opened the scoring in the 3rd inning when Doug and Freddy singled in a run each to take a 2 run lead over the Champs. The Emperors answered right back when Forty drove in Mike from 3rd on a groundout. Leland made the game a 2 run difference again when Angel barreled around the bases for a solo Home Run in the 5th inning. Leland added another run in the 6th when Edwin took advantage of an argument and flew around the bases for the game’s final run. The Emperors uncharacteristically struck out a total of 5 times in the game and could not get a runner into scoring position since the 4th inning. In fact, that runner, which scored for the Emperors, was the only runner to reach scoring position for the Emperors throughout the entire game.

Emperors: Mike (1-3, 1 Tirple)

Leland Legends: Doug (1-3, 1 Double, 1 RBI)    Angel (2-3, 1 Single, 1 Home-run, 1 RBI)

Gold 11 – Ravens 1:

The Gold is definitely one of this season’s highest scoring teams and they proved how good they still are by blowing out the Ravens in this one. The scoring started in the 1st inning when Papo tripled and was driven in on a sac fly by Dusty to give The Gold a 1-0 lead. The next inning, The Gold jumped ahead with a 5 run inning. They totaled 7 hits that inning. Dusty drove in 2 more runs when he doubled. Four runs followed the next inning highlighted by 5 extra base hits. Four players had an RBI that inning, and Dusty obtained his 4th of the game. The Ravens got on the scoreboard in the 5th inning when Danny hit a sac fly for his team. In the 5th inning, Papo tripled in a run for The Gold. The Ravens had to say nevermore when the mercy rule was put into effect in the 5th inning.

Gold: Papo (4-4, 1 Single, 1 Double, 2 Triples, 2 RBIs)    Dusty (2-4, 2 Doubles, 4 RBIs)

Ravens: Artie (2-2, 1 Single, 1 Double)

Sugar Hill 7 – Saints 1:

Sugar Hill is making a strong case for being one of the NYESL’s best teams this season.  The Saints were trying to get a win on the board when these two faced each other. Sugar Hill jumped out to an early lead when Eccy singled in a run in the 1st inning. They added two more in the 3rd when Cooks hit a 2 run HR. Another 2 runs were added on in the top of the 5th when Baez hit a 2 run, 2 out double. SugarHill’s final runs came in the 6th inning when Ralph hit a 2 run home run to put an exclamation mark on the day. The Saints scored their only run in the final inning when Pete Jr. hit an RBI triple. Hopefully The Saints can build around that and score more runs in the weeks to come.

Sugar Hill: Ralph (2-4, 2 Singles, 2 RBIs)    Cooks (3-4, 2 Singles, 1 Home-run, 1 RBI)

Saints: Raul (1-3, 1 Double)

Diamondbacks 4 – Emperors 0:

This game was scoreless till the top of the 5th inning, where the Diamondbacks put a 4 spot on the scoreboard. Dave reached base with a single and Jay drove him in with an RBI double. Martin followed his dad’s hit with an RBI single and Joey drove in Martin with an RBI double. Lionel put the finishing touches with an RBI single, to make the score 4 – 0. This is all the scoring in the game as the Emperors offense could not put together hits.

Diamondbacks: Jay (2-4, 1 Single, 1 Double, 1 RBI)    Martin (2-4, 2 Singles, 1 RBI)

Emperors: Mike (3-4, 3 Singles)

Sugar Hill 0 – Royals 5:

The Royals got the board first in the bottom half of the 4th inning thanks to Darnell`s 2 run home-run. In the bottom of the 5th inning, they struck again. Chey hit a solo home-run to make the score 3 – 0. In the next inning, the Royals put the game away with 2 more runs. Dave and Ruben reached base with singles and Darnell drove them in with a 2 RBI double. The Royals went on to win 5 – 0.

Sugar Hill: Ralph (1-3, 1 Triple)

Royals: Chey (2-3, 1 Single, 1 Home-run, 1 RBI)    Darnell (2-3, 1 Double, 1 Home-run, 4 RBIs)

Royals 5 – Ravens 2:

The Royals got the offense going early. In the top of the 1st, Frankie reached on a double and Dave drove him in with an RBI double. The Ravens got that run back in the bottom half of the inning. Dax got the offense going with a double and Nelson drove him in with an RBI double. In the top of the 3rd inning, the Royals put up a 3 spot on the scoreboard. Frankie hit a single and Eric drove him in with an RBI double. Dave followed that up with his own RBI double. Ruben drove in the 3rd run of the inning with an RBI single. In the top of the 5th inning, the Royals added an insurance run, thanks to Chey`s RBI single. The Ravens tried to get something going in the bottom of the 7th inning. Jeremy and Ed hit back to back singles and Nelson drove them in with an RBI single, making the score 5 – 2 but that is all the scoring that they got.

Royals: Dave (4-4, 2 Singles, 2 Doubles, 2 RBIs)    Ruben (2-4, 2 Singles, 1 RBI)

Ravens: Nelson (3-4, 2 Singles, 1 Double, 2 RBIs)

Silver Bullets 2 – Gold 3:

The stats where not taken for the Gold. This is the second time, this match-up was not recorded properly. This was a very intense game. Gold won on a walk-off sac fly in the bottom of the 7th inning. (Please do the stats properly).

Stickball Tribune – Columbus Day Tournament 2016

THE STICKBALL TRIBUNE

THE NYESL COLUMBUS DAYTOURNAMENT – 2016
The Columbus Day Tournament is both a joyful and sad weekendfor Stickball.  It’s a great 2-daytournament that represents the last major championship of the year (MDT, NYESLSeason, LDT) but it also represents the final stickball weekend untilApril.  We have had an amazing season sofar.  While tensions were definitelyhigh, things seem to be getting better on the BLVD and any progress is positiveprogress.
We saw the Silver Bullets come out firing in their firsttournament by winning the Memorial Day Tournament.  We saw the Emperors cement themselves in thehistory books by winning 3 NYESL championships back to back to back.  And most recently, we witnessed the Chargerstake the Labor Day Tournament for the second time in as many years.
Last year, we saw a team traveling for the first timeoutside of New York/New Jersey to compete in the Columbus Day Tournament andlet’s just say, it was not a long trip home for them as the Chargers came inand won their first ever appearance at the CDT. Impressive to say the least and with their recent LDT win, The Chargersare definitely making a name for themselves and slowly becoming the team tobeat.
The CDT is always an interesting tournament.  You usually see teams bring out their “FreeAgent” acquisitions, new faces/teams trying to come into the league and youalso get a sense of urgency from teams as we all go hard and try hard todesperately salvage a championship in that given year.  Competition is high.  The fun doesn’t stop.  And let’s end 2016 with a bang!
Here is a complete list of teams joining the NYESL for theCDT 2016: ·

SugarHill
o  One of the best hitting teams in theleague.  These young guns and hit and runwith the best of them.  When these guysare on, they are hard to stop.  Willtheir defense step up and get them to the promise land?·

TheWarriors
o  Another team from East Harlem. Some of us knowthem from playing in tournaments, some from playing in the Harlem Fall Leaguein prior years.  Definitely a team youshouldn’t sleep on as they can send some good sticks to the plate.  Word is a couple key players may not be inthe lineup this weekend.  Will they haveenough to compete with the best of them?·

TheAstros
o  Making their first official debut to theNYESL.  Led by former Chief’s Angel Rosaand Ron Pascual, the Astros are looking to come into the CDT and compete withthe rest of us.  Put together with some vetsand some new comers to the game, will they have enough to make some noise?·
The Chargers
A team to be reckoned with! The Chargers continue to prove their doubters wrong by being in the thick of things every tournament.  They have already appeared in 2 of the 3 major championships thus far and look to do the same for the 4th and final major championship of the year.  Can they continue their run of high level stickball? The NYESL appreciates them for traveling up to compete in another CDT!
The Silver Bullets
o  When the Silver Bullets are on the field, youknow it.  There’s a certain stigma tothis team and they know it.  Afterwinning the MDT their confidence has been at an all time high and rightfullyso.  They know that no matter the cir*****stance, they can be in every game.  Led by gooddefense, this team is looking to get their second championship this year! ·

TheDiamondbacks
o   A teamthat stays true to who they are.  Theyrun things a certain way and that’s what matters to them.  With a core group of guys who continue to getbetter, the D-Backs are looking to compete with the best teams in theleague.  Can they get over the hump?·

TheSaints
o  No matter what is going on, players leaving, adding players, The Saints find a way to keep Jersey City Stickball alive.  Pete and his sons are some of the mostpassionate stickball people you will ever meet in the game and they will doeverything they can to keep their tradition alive.  ·

TheRavens
o  Led by Artie and Ed Brunson the Ravens arelooking to continue to progress and get better with every tournament.  This team has been through a lot throughoutthe years but they feel like they finally have their core group of guys to makesome noise.  ·

TheLeland Legends
o  The quietest successful team on the BLVD.  This team no matter what finds a way to be inthe top 4 of the standings.  Will theyfind a way to get past their post season woes for the CDT?·

TheRoyals
o  #RoyalFAM is what we will continue to be. Noadditions.  No changes.  Straight Royal stickball.  We have been through a lot the past few yearsourselves but always find a way to field a top team in this game.  Columbus Day Tourneys have always been themost successful for us reaching the championship game 3 times.  Will this be the year?·

The Gold
o  Every time I hear the Gold is too old or theirrun is done, they prove their doubters wrong. Every time.  Even by reaching the NYESLchampionship recently and who knows what they could have done in Miami if mostof their team didn’t have to leave (Gold Forfeited the semi-finals) due to thelong rain delay.  Word on the street isthey picked up a couple young guns.  Let’ssee what the CDT has in store.  ·

TheEmperors
o  The Emperors continue to be one of the teams tobeat, recently winning the NYESL championship. They continue to elevate their play when it matters most and lookforward to having a better showing this CDT. They still have some of the best players in the league and are ready toshow it.

Let’s continue towork towards making the game better and stronger.  I would like to thank the board for doing anamazing job on their first year.  I lookforward to what they have in store for year 2. Let’s have a great last tourney of 2016!
