2018 NYESL Opening Day

The NYESL 2018 season is right around the corner! A lot has happened this off-season. Opening day is going to be rough since the stickball community has lost two great men.

Philip “Chino” Santana was one of the few old timers who showed up to the boulevard every week to support his sons and the Royals. When you played the royals, you knew that you were going to hear Chino talking trash on the sidelines. Chino’s love for the game was beyond words. It’s going to be rough not hearing Chino on the sidelines every Sunday but he will definitely be on the boulevard in spirit.

Wayne “Wayne’s World” Lippold was a role model to all people, young and old. Wayne played for the Silver Bullets as he was one of the leaders for the young team. Wayne got his nickname “Wayne’s World” by his solid defense and amazing offense. He was recently inducted into the Stickball Hall of Fame. Wayne was someone you always wanted to be around. He brought such positive energy to the boulevard every week. The young Silver Bullets team will stay strong & play for Wayne every week! Wayne’s legacy will live on forever. Opening Day will be rough but times like this is when the Stickball community will come together to have a great 2018 season!

We have 7 teams returning & 1 new team for the 2018 season. The Royals, Leland Legends, Gold, Emperors, Silver Bullets, Diamondbacks, Ravens & Wolfpack. The Wolfpack changed their name from Sugar Hill, so don’t think they are new kids on the block. The Jersey City Saints will not be part of the NYESL anymore as players went their separate ways.

The NYESL wants the kids of stickball to be more involved so every week after the second set of games and before the third set of games, the NYESL will be having a kids game. All games will be on hold until after the kids game. The NYESL hopes that this will get parents/players/fans to get more involved with the kids in our league.

Opening Day Games:

Field 1 @ 9:00 am – Leland vs Gold (Diamondbacks umpire)

This is a rematch of last years championship game. The 2017 regular season champs, Leland Legends, are hoping to start off there 2018 season the same way they ended their 2017 season. The Gold are looking to get revenge as they may still have a bad taste in their mouth from last year.

Field 2 @ 9:00 am – Royals vs Ravens (Emperors umpire)

These two teams have some history. Every year the result of this match up is a good one. The Royals are going to have a tough task as they have to handle the lost of Chino.  They are looking to get off to a good start. The Ravens will be looking to find there identity as they will have many new faces on the roster. They lost a few key players but gained a couple of young players. The Royals will have an advantage playing on field 2 since they have one of the better lefty hitting lineups in the league.

Field 1 @ 10:30 am – Leland vs Diamondbacks (Silver Bullets umpire)

Dating back to last season, Leland has gone 3-0 vs the Diamondbacks. Leland will be coming into this game warm from a previous game and will be looking for their play from their championship run to roll over to this season. Meanwhile the D-Backs will be looking to make a statement in their first game of a new season. The D-backs are looking to improve on last season’s success.

Field 2 @ 10:30 am – Royals vs Emperors (Wolfpack umpire)

This will be an interesting game as one of the top offenses in the league, the Royals, face off against one of the top defenses in the league, the Emperors. Last season, the Royals took the series 2-1 against the Emperors and are looking to continue this success. This season the royals are looking to capture their first championship while the Emperors are looking to stay a dominate threat in the league.

Field 1 @ 1:15 pm – Silver Bullets vs Gold (Leland umpire)

Coming into this game, the Gold will be looking to finish opening day on a good note.  The Silver Bullets are looking to stay strong as a team with the passing of Wayne Lippold, their veteran leader of the team. The Gold ended last season 3 – 1 against the Silver Bullets and are looking to continue this dominance against them. Meanwhile, the Bullets are looking to come in as a more mature team, that can show how dominate they can be for years to come. This game is on field 1, which means this game will come down to the defense and timely hitting.

Field 2 @ 1:15 pm – Wolfpack vs Ravens (Royals umpire)

The ravens will possibly be looking to start their season off on the right foot. The Wolfpack will be looking to make a statement in their first game in the NYESL under the new team name. The Wolfpack are the same group of players from sugar hill along with a few changes they made this off-season. The Wolfpack will try to start their week 1 debut with a win. Both teams are loaded with young talent. This should be a fun game with a lot of speed and excitement with the trees on field 2.

Field 1 @ 2:30 pm – Silver Bullets vs Diamondbacks (Gold umpire)

The last game of the day consist of two of the youngest teams in the league. Both teams are looking to end the day on a good note. This should be a game full of young talent. The Diamondbacks are looking to get a win against the Silver Bullets as they have lost 3 of their last 4 meetings and ended their last meeting in a tie.

Field 2 @ 2:30 pm – Wolfpack vs Emperors (Ravens umpire)

The Wolfpack are looking to have a different outcome than Sugar Hill did against the Emperors. With a new team name, the Wolfpack are looking to get their first win against the Emperors. The Emperors are looking to continue their dominance over this team. The Emperors won all four meetings against Sugar Hill last year. This should be good one.

2017 Columbus Day Tournament

2017 has been an eventful year. The Leland Legends won their first championship, the Gold showed their dominance in the league like always, France came to visit the NYESL, the MLB Network and the NYESL have been working together to expand this game we love and much more. Recently as many of you know, Puerto Rico is going through some tough times after Hurricane Maria. I would like to send my condolences to all those families and friends that have been left with little to nothing in Puerto Rico. Usually this tournament is played to honor breast cancer awareness but this year, we are playing for much more than that. We are all lucky to come together as a community and play stickball in honor of breast cancer awareness, Puerto Rico, and our fallen stickball member, Joey Pacheco , who recently passed away in a tragic accident. The League will like to help donate clothes to those in Puerto Rico so if you want to particapate in this charity event, please bring any clothes that may be no use to you. We will be collecting clothes all weekend and sending them to Puerto Rico with in the week. Please help our Puerto Rico family as much as you can.

This year we have the nine regular season teams, Emperors, Saints, Silver Bullets, Gold, Ravens, Sugar Hill, Royals, Diamondbacks, and Leland Legends, entering the Columbus Day Tournament. Game 4 Results: Gold (2) vs Ravens (0) (Field 2 / 11:00 am)

Game 4 was almost another upset. The Ravens had no problem keeping up with the Gold as they kept the Gold offense quite. The Gold always finds a way to wake up their offense when it matters most. Second Round:

Game 5 Results: Gold (4) vs Silver Bullets (0)

Game 5 was all Gold, as the Silver Bullets could not string hits together. The Gold`s offense was quite early but woke up after a unfortunate call that the young Bullet`s team could not recover from. The Gold advanced to the championship round with a 4 – 0 win of the Silver Bullets.

Game 6 Results: Emperors (0) vs Leland Legends (4)

Game 6 was an upset that many did not see coming. The Leland Legends offense put up 4 runs on the Emperors. Their defense was one of the best on Sunday as they shut out a strong offensive team. The Leland Legends advanced to the championship round with a 4 – 0 win over the Emperors.

Third Round:

Game 7 Results: Gold (4) vs Leland Legends (7)

Game 7 was a great Championship game. The 5th seed, the Leland Legends, faced off against the 1st seed, the Gold. The Leland Legends offensive was unstoppable this game. They put the pressure on the Gold from the start. The Gold tried to get a comeback started but Leland was able to remain strong defensively. The Leland Legends defeated the Gold by a score of 7 – 4.

Leland Legends – 2017 NYESL Champions

The Leland Legends have shocked the stickball world. The team has been around for years but they made big changes this year. They have added many new faces but the name, the heart to win, the Gee love and the saying “BADOOOOOOH” never changed. Captain, Eddie F., was awarded the MVP while leading his team to their first NYESL championship. Gee was definitely watching over his Leland brothers as they dominated the competition. If you thought the Leland Legends were long gone, you have been sadly mistaken. Congratulations to the 2017 Leland Legends on winning their first title in stickball history.

Third Round:

Match-up Analyst:

Game 1: Sugar Hill vs Silver Bullets

This should be a great match-up. These are the two youngest teams in the NYESL battling it out. Sugar Hill have been giving the Silver Bullets trouble all year. Sugar Hill is 3 – 0 vs the Silver Bullets this season, beating the Bullets, 2 – 0, 9 – 7, and 5 – 1. Sugar Hill has out scored the Silver Bullets, 16 to 8 in all three head to head match-ups. The last time, these two teams faced each other on field 1, it was a great defensive game, as Sugar Hill went on to win by the score of 2 – 0.

Game 2: Royals vs Leland Legends

This is going to be another good game. Former Leland Legend, Dave Meerow, will face off against his old team nice and early. The Royals have 2 – 1 record the Leland Legends during the season. The Royals have defeated Leland 1 – 0 and 4 – 1 in the first two meetings. The Leland Legends got revenge in the last meeting with a 6 – 2 win. The Royals have the advantage in this match-up as their team consist of multiple left handed batters and everyone who has been two Stickball Blvd knows that field 2 is a left handed hitters favorite field due to all the trees. The last time Leland and the Royals played on field 2, Leland dominated the game and won by the score of 6 – 2.

Game 3: Emperors vs Diamondbacks

The Diamondbacks have not had a successful 2017 season but their is some good news for them heading into the playoffs. They will be facing off against the former, 3 times in a row, NYESL regular season champions, the Emperors. The good news for the Diamondbacks is that they have beaten the Emperors, 4 – 0, during the season and they lost two close games as well. The Emperors have a 2 – 1 record against the Diamondbacks this season. The bad news for the Diamondbacks is that the Emperors always turn things up an extra notch when the playoffs come.

Game 4: Gold vs Ravens

The Gold have swept the season series against the Ravens. The Gold have out scored the Ravens by a total of 18 – 1. If the Ravens show up with a full team, they will have put up a great fight against the Gold and possibly even upset them. The Gold have been the hottest team in the league all year long. They are looking for championship number 46. The Ravens have a tough task on their hands but anything can happen on a stickball Sunday.

Week Eight Recap

Ricky Torres and Rich Torres have lost a close relative this past Saturday. As a league, everyone agreed to let the Emperors postpone their game against the Royals and the Gold. This community is much more bigger than just a game. When one of our fellow stickball brothers go through such a tragedy, the whole league grieves as well. The whole stickball community will like to send our prayers to the Torres family and Emperors family, as they push through this rough time. We take this game for granted sometimes and tragedies make us realize that we are all one family.
