The biggest Stickball event of 2010 will take place on the legendary Stickball Blvd, in the Soundview section of the Bronx over Memorial Weekend. The best teams from San Diego, Miami, Orlando, Puerto Rico, New Jersey, Manhattan, and, of course, the Bronx will clash on Stickball Blvd! The level of competition in this tournament is unmatched as the best Stickball players in the world face off for 3 days in NYC! The event is hosted by the New York Emperors Stickball League(NYESL).
NYESL’s Memorial Weekend Tournament remains one of the most energetic and popular events to attend over the holiday weekend for those looking for authentic old-school New York flavor. Guests looking for good old-fashioned stickball and hilarious trash-talking are never disappointed. In April, sportswear giant Nike partnered with NYESL to host an exhibition stickball game in front of the Nike Mercer flagship store in Soho. Musician Q-Tip DJ’d the free well-attended event.
The audience packed the store after the games for a Q&A with the NYESL
stickball players. The high-energy stickball games are free and open to the public. In addition to the games, there will be free kids entertainment, food, live music, and memorabilia for sale. This year marks 26 years that NYESL has hosted this event. Stickball, street baseball, is a classic New York City street game, which had its humble beginnings in the 1940’s. Stickball remains a vibrant part of New York, with men of all ages still playing the game. Stickball4Kids, the NYESL’s children’s league will play a one game exhibition on Monday. Stickball4Kids, made up of boys and girls, embodies the NYESL motto, “Stickball, not just a game. A Tradition.”
