Welcome back to NYC Stickball brought to you by the NYESL 2009. With all the off season trades this past winter this season is highly anticipated & already proving to be one of the most competitive seasons the league has ever seen. 16 wins this season could prove difficult to accomplish for any team. This year the NYESL is hosting 9 teams. While the Bronx Knights will be missed. We are very excited to have the arrival of the Jersey City Saints who have made appearances in the past couple years and showed a lot of potential in wins & even in losses during the last few tournaments. They represent the only NJ team in Stickball and they add another competitive level to our game.
The season opened on a beautiful spring day on Sunday April 5th allowing all 9 teams to play their 2 game sets & kick off the 2009 season. The Royals opened the season at 10am on field 1 vs Nothing Personal & came out swinging scoring 8 runs & held N.P. to only 1 run for the 8-1 victory. Veteran / MVP Andy Rivera had 4 hits in 5 at bats. Newly crowned Royal Daryl Warfield also had a big 1st game going 3 for 4 with 2 rbi’s. On field 2 (10am) the new look Stem went to war with the Ravens making what most would have predicted as a blow out, one of the most entertaining games of the day. The Ravens prevailed with an 8-6 win but the stem were literally one chop ball away from tying this one up late in the game. Due to the chop ball call on the stem, they were unable to rally but were noticeably competitive in this game. New addition Wayne Lippold went 4 for 5 with 2 rbi’s. Vic Luciano also went 4 for 5 in the loss. For the Ravens Doug Ruiz went 3 for 4 with 2 rbi’s & Big Rich Torres also contributed with 2 rbi’s of his own to lead the ravens in this one. On field 3 (10am) the Emperors took on the NJ Saints in their premiere game in the NYESL & quickly reminded the Saints of the competitive level of this league compared to the manhattan league as they cruised to a 5-1 victory. Former Royal and new Emperor Albert Colon Jr. could not be contained as he drove in all 5 rbi’s going 3 for 3 in his Emperor debut.
At 11am on Field 1 the Leland Legends made early lunch of the Bronx Bandits scoring 13 runs in a 13-3 blow out victory in the legends 1st game of the season. New additions Russel & Darnel & ever improving Edwin Jr. had 3 rbi’s each. Boobie also had a strong 1st game going 4 for 4 with an rbi of his own. For the Bandits Carlos Garcia notably went 3 for 3 in the loss. On Field 2 (11am) The Gold took on the Royals and easily walked away with a 6-1 win on the shoulders of Ed Batances who went 3 for 4 & had 4 rbi’s & Carlito Santiago who went 2 for 4 with 2 rbi’s in this game. Field 3 @ 11am featured Starling AC & the Stem. The Ravens must have knocked the wind out of Stem earlier as they allowed 7 runs to Starling AC & couldn’t get more than two runs to cross the plate. Robert Rodriguez went 3 for 4 with an rbi & Mickey Rodriguez went 2 for 3 with 2 rbi’s to lead Starling to their 1st win of the season.
On field 1 (noon) the Gold continued to do what they do best as unleashed a hitting clinic on the NJ Saints on their way to an 8-2 victory. Gold had 8 players who contribute 2 or more hits. Nick from Gold went 4 for 4 with an rbi & Carlito Santiago added his own perfect game going 3 for 3 with an rbi. On Field 2 (PowerAde GAME of the WEEK) the Leland Legends showed the Emperors that 2009 was a new year and were able to out hit and defend their way to a 7-4 win over the Emperors with the bats of father & son combination of Eddie F & Edwin Jr. On field 3 (noon) the Ravens held down the bandits for a 5-2 victory. Ed Brunson & Miguel Almodovar both went 3 for 4 & Rich Torres added a solo home run to seal the victory.
It’s still too early in the season but The Legends, Gold & Ravens all went undefeated on Opening day and were quick to make noise on the boulevard in week 1, This Sunday April 19th will be week 2 & we’ll be paying close attention at how the standings play out. With the Memorial Tournament just weeks away I’m sure every team is looking to get their kinks out and get into mid season form ASAP. So come down with your friends and family & don’t miss us on the boulevard this Sunday at 10am sharp. Look forward to seeing you all there.
