Before I get into the week 7 recap, it saddens me to inform our stickball family that today we lost our good friend Ralph "Daddy" Maldonado. As most of you know, Daddy was involved in an accident over the winter and had been fighting for his life for several months. Daddy had been a part of this league since its inception and was the founder of the Latin Dukes stickball team which played in the NYESL from 1985 to 2003, and led the Dukes to 2 Memorial Day Championships in 1999 and 2000, as well as NYESL league championships in 1987 and 1992. Daddy was known for his witty remarks and his infectious personality and was beloved by all of us on the Blvd. I first met him when I was 13 years old and when i hung up the baseball cleats he gave me my first chance to play on his team in 2001. I’ve been hooked on this game ever since and he is a big part of the reason why I love this game today. He was a father figure to us all and his presence on the Blvd will be missed greatly. We will share any funeral arrangements and viewings as soon as we have the details…
Game of the Week- Royals 8 vs The Gold 4
The Royals took the first match-up of the season from the Gold with a late game rally and The Gold was looking to get even. The Gold struck first in the first inning on an RBI double by Stevie. The Gold then tacked on 2 more runs in the second on a 2-run HR by Watts and took a 3-0 lead. The Royal offense started to get going in the third on Darnell’s RBI double which cut the lead by 2. In the fourth, the Royals got an RBI single from Chris, tied the game on Darnell’s second RBI double, and took the lead on Kevin’s 2 run single. The Royals kept it going in the 5th on RBI doubles by Petey, Chris and Davey. After 8 unanswered runs, the Gold were unable to rally back.
Ravens 9 vs Devils 4- The Devils came into this game losers of 6 straight and the Ravens came out and compounded the losing streak. Skylar drove in his brother Austin in the first to give the Ravens a 1-0 lead. Efrain added an RBI double and Austin added a 2-run single in the second to make it 4-0. In the fourth, Al-Boog and Brunson added RBI doubles to extend the lead to 6-0. The Devils woke up in the 5th to make it a game. Cooks, Will, Papolo and Brian each had RBI’s in the inning but that would be as close as they would get. Dom, Skylar and Elvin added RBI’s late to give the Ravens the 9-4 win.
Royals 12 vs Ravens 1- Both the Ravens and Royals were looking to double up after winning their first games earlier. The Royal offense picked up right were they left off and got started early on Kevins RBI single in the first. Petey picked up and RBI single in the second, followed by Adams RBI triple and Daveys RBI single. Skylar cut into the lead in the 4th for the Ravens with a solo HR. But the Royals offense would not let up. They added two in the 5th on RBI doubles by Kevin and Eric, and then 6 more in the 6th. In the inning Adam hit a 2-run HR, followed by Darnell and Eric’s RBI singles, capped by Rubens 2-run double and Royals went on to win via the mercy rule.
Devils 5 vs Leland 0- This match-up was the surprise of the day as it pit the leagues hottest team versus its coldest. Cooks got the Devils on the board in the first with his RBI double. The Devils defense held Leland in check until they could add some more runs in the 5th. In the inning Cooks added his second RBI of the game and Papolo drove in 2 with his double. Will added and RBI in the 6th to give the Devils the 5-0 lead. Leland’s usually potent offense had no answers for the Devils and scattered 6 hits.
D’Backs 8 vs Saints 0- After a solid week 6, the Saints were looking to keep the momentum going against the D’Backs who struggled in week 6. But the D’Backs have had the Saints number recently and this game was no different. The D’Backs exploded for 6 runs in the second to put this game away early. Naz started the scoring with an RBI single, followed by an RBI single from Chris. Dave added an RBI single, followed by Jays 2-run triple and Martins RBI single. Jay and Naz added RBI’s late to seal the shutout win for the D’Backs. Pedro and Josh had multi-hit games for the Saints but that would be all the Saint offense was quite throughout.
Emperors 8 vs The Gold 1- After taking 2 games last week, the Emperor offense has started to look like the potent offense we all knew they had. The Emperor bats continued to surge in this game against their heated rivals the Gold. Caban hit an RBI double in the first to get the Emperor offense going. In the third, Mike hit a 2-run HR to give the Emperors a 3-0 lead. The Emperors struck again in the 5th on a 2 run triple by Caban and an RBI double by Eric. Mike continued to stay hot and added another RBI in the 6th. The only offense the Gold came away with in this game was Alex’s RBI single in the 6th.
Leland 5 vs D’Backs 0- After losing their first game since week 1, Leland was ready to bounce back against a confident D’Back team who won easily in their first game. Defense reigned supreme early on as both teams couldn’t put any runs on the board until the 5th inning when Leland finally broke through. Ralph put Leland on the board with an RBI single. In the 6th, Leland broke the game open as their offense got going. Ferdi hit an RBI single, followed by Jays RBI single, and Doug’s 2-run single to put them ahead 5-0. That’s all Leland would need as the D’Backs offense disappeared in their second game. Martin had 2 of the 3 D’Back hits in this game.
Emperors 12 vs Saints 4- The Saints were looking to rebound after their disappointing game 1 performance but ran into an Emperor offense that was firing on all cylinders on Sunday.
