Game of the Week- D’Backs 5 vs Saints 4
The D’Backs have been a thorn in the Saints side the last few matchups and this past Sunday was no different. The Saints were anxious to avenge last years playoff losses against the D’Backs but were plagued by another slow start in this one. Lou put the D’Backs on the board with an RBI single in the fourth. And in the fifth they took a commanding 5-0 lead with a four spot. Anthony hit an RBI single, followed by Martins 2-run triple, and capped off by Johns RBI single. The Saints made things interesting in the top of the sixth when Freddy led the inning of with a HR, and Pete Jr. added a 2-run HR of his own. Warfield brought the Saints within 1 run with a sac fly later in the inning. But that would be all the scoring for the Saints as they were unable to complete the comeback and the D’Backs collected their first win of the season.
The Gold 7 vs D’Backs 2– The Gold dropped two games last week in late inning situations and wanted to get back on track this week. The D’Backs were looking to get their first win of the season and it looked like they would through the first six innings of this game. Schenk gave the D’Backs the early lead with an RBI double in the second inning. In the fifth inning, Martin made it 2-0 with a solo HR. Through six innings the Gold had no answer. Down to their last two outs, Dusty gave the Gold life with an egg ball that barely crossed the line and turned into a double. Josh then came through with the clutch RBI single to bring the Gold within 1. Watts gave the Gold the lead with his 2-run double and the carousel began. The Gold brought 12 hitters to the plate in a 7-run seventh inning and avoided losing their third straight. Dusty collected 3 hits in the game and Josh had two RBI singles in the seventh inning.
Emperors 2 vs Saints 2- Both of these teams have yet to hit like the rest of the league knows they can. The Emperors tough defense always keeps them in games, while the Saints have struggled on the defensive end. Mike put the Emperors ahead in the first inning with an RBI single and showed he is comfortable in his new digs. The Saints tied the game in the bottom of the second on Ron’s RBI single, and then took the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Freddy hit an RBI single. The one run lead was short lived as the Emperors tied the game in the sixth with Vic’s RBI single. Neither team could break tie in the seventh and this one ended knotted at 2.
The Gold 7 vs Emperors 0 – Some Emperors were clamoring that this should have been the GOTW, but this game was all Gold as they shut out the Emperors. Carlitos got the scoring started for the Gold with his RBI single in the first. From there, the game looked to be one of the classic Gold/Emperor battles with spectacular defense on display. But in the fifth inning Pito gave the Gold a 2-0 lead, knocking in Josh who got on with a triple. Then in the sixth, The Gold put the game away with 4 more runs. Frankie, Alex, Chicky, and Josh all recorded RBI’s in the inning. The Emperors never really got the offense going as they recorded just 4 hits in the game. Mike and Ant live recorded all the hits for the Emperors in this one.
Royals 8 vs Ravens 5- The Royals league leading offense continued to chug along and needed every run to outlast the Ravens in this game. The Ravens offense jumped out to the quick lead when Dax led off the game with a HR. Nene made it 2-0 with an RBI single in his return to the Blvd. But the Royals answered right back in the bottom of the inning. Darnell, Ruben, and Jonathan each hit RBI singles to give the Royals the 3-2 lead. Frankie hit a HR in the second, and Adam hit one in the fourth to extend the Royal lead. But things got interesting in the fifth inning as Artie turned a 6-2 game into a one run game with one swing of the bat after hitting a 3-run HR. But in the sixth, Frankie atoned for an error that led to the 3 run homer by hitting his second HR of the game and extending the lead to 8-5. The Ravens were unable to mount another comeback and their nightmare start to the 2014 season continued.
Leland 6 vs Devils 6- Leland wanted to show the Devils that your first go around in this league shouldn’t be as easy as the Devils have made it look so far to start the season and they jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Dave, Ferdi, and Lou all knocked in runs for Leland in the inning. The Devils got on board in the third with and RBI double from Richie, and then tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth on Brians 2-run double. Leland scored 2 in the sixth to regain the lead on RBIs from Doug and Eddie F. But the Devils answered right back and took the lead in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single from Bambino and 2-run double from Mark. Down by 1 run in the seventh, and down to their last out, Leland got three consecutive singles to tie the game, capped by Jays clutch RBI single. The Devils had no answer in their half in the seventh and this one ended tied at 6.
Leland 7 vs Royals 5- The Royals came into this game a perfect 5-0, but Leland has owned the Royals in the past and weren’t scared of the league leading offense. Ferdi put Leland on top quickly with his RBI single in the first. The Royals had a perfect opportunity to make a statement in the first and had 5 hits in the inning, but only managed one run. Eric tied the game with an RBI single, but over aggressive base-running doomed the inning as runners were thrown out at 3rd and home. Leland sent 12 hitters to the plate in the fourth and took a commanding 6-1 lead. Izzy, Jay, Ralph, Dave, and Ferdi all had RBIs in the inning. The Royals chipped away with a 2-run HR by Jonathan in the fourth, and an RBI single by Petey in the sixth to make it 6-4. Lou added an insurance HR in the seventh to make it 7-4. Davey hit a HR to start the 7th inning for the Royals to make it 7-5 with the top of the order coming up, but the Royals couldn’t get the offense going and suffered their first loss of the year.
Devils 7 vs Ravens 3- The Devils offense continued to impress as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first as Mark and Willie each hit RBI singles and Milton added a 2-run double. The Ravens answered back with three runs of their own in the second. Nelson hit a HR in the inning and Dom and Dax added RBI singles to cut the lead to 4-3. But that was as close as the Ravens would get in this one as the offense fizzled the rest of the way. Willie added another RBI single for the Devils in the third, and Mark and Cooks each added RBI’s in the fourth to extend the lead to 7-3. The Devils continued to impress the league in their inaugural season and find themselves tied in third place after 6 games.
